Hematologic tumors

Whilst this is a well known comphcation of chemotherapy, particularly with hematological tumors, it is extremely rare as a comphcation of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for gynecological tumors. [Pg.2863]

A different approach to improving the clinical data on the significance of drug-resistance mechanisms might be to study the development of resistance in sequential biopsy samples from the same individual(s). Although this seems attractive in principle, the reality is that, for most patients, tissue samples are not easy to obtain. With hematological tumors, repeat samples of bone marrow or lymph node biopsies obtained pre- and post-chemotherapy are a possibility. However, with solid tumors it is often unfeasible, or unethical, to attempt to obtain tissue samples after chemotherapy or at relapse. [Pg.11]

As obvious from literature search, cell-cell contacts have been a focus of interest in cancer research for many years (Ruch and Trosko 2001 Trosko and Ruch 1998). Recently, the impact of cell-matrix interactions on tumor ceU resistance was evidently demonstrated in several ceU lines from different soUd and hematologic tumor entities in vitro. Dependent on the characteristics, the phenomena were caUed ceU adhesion-mediated radiation resistance (CAM-RR) or cell adhesion-mediated drug resistance (CAM-DR) (CoRDES and Meineke 2003 Dalton 2003 Dami-ANO et al. 1999). Most relevant for in vitro cancer research, this effect can easily be observed when comparing the radio- or chemosensitivity of cells plated on a conventional plastic culture dish with cells plated on different matrix proteins like fibronectin, coUagen, or laminin. The contact with ECM proteins and the altera-... [Pg.107]

A number of studies have analyzed the efficacy of berberine in vivo against transplanted hematologic tumor cell fines as well as during virus-induced leukemia. Specifically, it has been showed that berberine has antitumoral potential in vivo against transplanted mouse acute lymphocytic leukemia P388 [112] and acute myeloid leukemia WEHI-3 [151]. fii addition, this alkaloid was able to inhibit the progression of erythroleukemia induced by mouse rebovirus. Friend, in immunocompetent mice [152]. [Pg.4487]

Symptoms that are not a result of the direct effects of the tumor are termed paraneoplastic syndromes. They may be caused by substances secreted by the tumor or in response to the tumor and often occur in tissues far from the site of malignancy. Fhraneoplastic syndromes are numerous and affect a wide variety of systems, including the endocrine, neurologic, skeletal, renal, metabolic, vascular, and hematologic systems. [Pg.1326]

O Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a procedure used mainly to treat hematologic malignancies via high-dose chemotherapy and/or a graft-versus-tumor effect. [Pg.1447]

As well as NONOates, other NO donors also showed anticancer activity independently. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a metal-NO complex, showed cytotoxic effects on the cells of some patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) or chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMMoL), but not with multiple myeloma [109]. SNP and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) did not share the drug resistance. Interestingly, SNP had no effect on lymphocytes of healthy volunteers. These results suggest that SNP has an anti-tumor effect on human hematological malignant cells. [Pg.19]
