The four categories of plant responses will undoubtedly show increased PGR use in the future, yet it appears that propagation and plant height control may afford the most ready outlet for new commercial PGR products. Senescence retardation and morphological manipulation present real challenges for basic exploratory and developmental research and promise new product potential in the distant future. Economic potential will be recognized easily with imaginative use, even with the compounds presently available. [Pg.73]

The total biomass in the inoculated plants was higher by 20% than non inoculated Plants. The average height of the plants inoculated with Ecorrhiza (taken for 8 plants) as observed on 12.6.04 and 17.7.04 was found to be 39.75 and 78.63 cm for control plants and 47.41 and 89.5 cm for the inoculated plants (average taken for 12 plants). The increase in the average height in the inoculated plants was found to be 19.27% and 13.86% more at those dates as compared to the non inoculated plants. [Pg.107]

Ries et al. (1974) observed an increase in nitrate and water uptake by a barley culture grown ip nutrient solution with 10 mole/dm simazine. After 12 days the barley contained 22% more protein than the controls. When treated with 10" mole/dm simazine, barley was of the same height as the control plant after 12 days, but contained 26% more protein. Atrazine increased the growth of the embrional axis of bean and enhanced its protein synthesis. These investigations indicate that sublethal doses of simazine and atrazine stimulate protein synthesis in plants. [Pg.723]

The coffee plant is a relatively small tree or shmb belonging to the family Rubiaceae. It is often controlled to a height of 3 to 5 meters. Coffea arabica (milds) accounts for 69% of world production Coffea canephora (robustas), 30% and Coffea liberica and others, 1%. Each of these species includes several varieties. After the spring rains the plant produces white flowers. About sis months later the flowers are replaced by fmit approximately the size of a small cherry, hence they are called cherry. The fmit on a tree can include underripe, ripe (red, yellow, and purple color), and overripe cherries. It can be selectively picked (ripe only) or strip picked (predominantly ripe plus some underripe and overripe). [Pg.384]

Lift trucks are available to meet a variety of clearance restrictions. Noteworthy is narrow-aisle equipment. Another accessory worthy of consideration is the multilift mast, which permits lifting loads over 3.7 m (12 ft). Of special importance in specifying any mast is that it will clear the various door openings it must enter, which includes those of trucks, railcars, and buildings. To meet most conditions, the collapsed height of the mast must be 2235 mm (88 in). An ideal lift truck for chemical-plant distribution warehouses would have 2000-kg (4000-lb) capacity electric (battery) propulsion solid-state controls ... [Pg.1975]

Originally, the height of the chimney was designed to produce a draft sufficient to produce induced-draft air for combustion. With modern boiler plant, forced-draft and/or induced-draft fans are used. This allows for the greater degree of control of the air to be designed into the combustion appliance. The chimney is therefore only required to disperse the gases. [Pg.362]

The function of 7 ice = f (pc) depends on the design of the plant, quality of the product, type and number of vials, filling height and shelf temperature. With these data, constant, Tice has been found very reproducible during four different runs each with 400 vials filled with 2000 cm3 10 % saccharose solution, operation pressure (pc) controlled at 0.15 mbar ... [Pg.165]

Newly grafted fruit trees Fruit nurseries graft many hundreds of young trees each year, binding shoots of chosen cultivars onto the roots of other trees that will control height and vigor. The plant tissue fuses naturally at the graft point, or "union."... [Pg.294]

Pollution issues became significantly more important, however, with the Industrial Revolution the early 18th century. At that time, the by-products of industrial operations were released into the surrounding environment, with little or no attempt to determine or control their effect on plants, animals, and human life. One can hardly think of Great Britain at the height of its imperial powers without remembering the huge clouds of smoke and fumes that continuously... [Pg.238]

Sherer Environmental Chambers models CEL-512-37 and CEL-34-14 were freshly outfitted with incandescent (93W) and cool white VHO fluorescent bulbs. Eleven plants from each of the three sources were divided between the two chambers. Plant-top light-intensity varied from 2,800-3,300 ft-c, depending on plant height and the chamber involved. Controls were set for maximum relative humidity (measurements varied between 50 and 100%). Temperature was set at 22°C day (16H) and 17°C night (8 H). Plants were grown under these conditions for 12 wk. Beginning 24 Jan 1980, daylength was decreased from 16 to 11 h over a 4 wk period. [Pg.394]
