How can the Ecodesign Directive be further developed to handle the RISKCYCLE-topic So far, pollution issues are involved in the context of product evaluation and the derivation of product standards, but rather in the sense of LCA to capture the energy side and the other relevant environmental indicators. The topic of mercury in compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) has made it clear that pollution issues can be quite important in the context of this Directive. However, relevant limits for energy saving lamps were first set by a waste-related regulation, namely the Annex of the WEEE Directive [7]. 

Currently (2012) there is an internal discussion within the Commission on the evaluation of the Ecodesign Directive. One of the positions taken is to expand the scope of the directive a second time to broaden its field of application. There are some voices proposing to include the pollution issue in the context of setting product standards. Decisions are expected in late 2012. 

Pollution issues became significantly more important, however, with the Industrial Revolution the early 18th century. At that time, the by-products of industrial operations were released into the surrounding environment, with little or no attempt to determine or control their effect on plants, animals, and human life. One can hardly think of Great Britain at the height of its imperial powers without remembering the huge clouds of smoke and fumes that continuously...

The developing world is industrializing at an incredible rate. Pollution issues that are no longer of importance in the "First World" because of emission controls are again being seen in the developing world. Since this text has been used throughout the world, we have added a chapter on fluoride toxicity to address the issue. 

Bioavailability of contaminants in waters and sediments also changes in temporal and spatial scales. For example, because sediments are at best mixtures, rather than solutions like most water-borne pollutants, the conditions that influence the bioavailability of a contaminant in two similar sites may change from day to day as well as be considerably different even though they are in close proximity to each other. In general, the characteristics of the water above the sediment (overlaying water) and the interstitial water (water in-between the particles of the sediment, often referred to as pore water) most influence the bioavailability of the contaminants in the sediment. It is believed that pore water has the greatest influence on the bioavailabihty of contaminants in sediments (Suter et al. 2000). One way to think of contaminants in water is that they are today s pollution issue, whereas contaminants in sediments are both today s and yesteryear s issues. 

I shall begin this presentation by reminding you of some of the major air pollution issues in which traffic plays a major role.
