Fumaric acid is sold as resia-grade and food-grade. The general sales specification under which resia-grade fumaric acid is sold ia the United States specifies white, crystalline granules with a minimum assay of 99.6% and maximum ash content of 0.05%. Aluminum chlorohydrate is used in antiperspirants regulated by the U.S. Food and Dmg Administration (FDA). Solutions sold for FDA-approved use are colorless in appearance, have 23—24% Al as AI2O2, and low levels of iron (<50 ppm), sulfate (<0.025 %), metals (Ga, Mg, Na <10 ppm), and heavy metals (as Pb <10 ppm). The pH of these solutions at 25°G is about 3.8—4.0. Typically, solutions at 25°G have specific gravities from 1.33 to 1.35 and viscosities from 40 to 60 mPa-s(=cps). The bubble size in these cells tends to be the smallest (10 to 50 Im) as compared to the dissolved-air and dispersed-air flotation systems. Also, very httle turbulence is created by the bubble formation. Accordingly, this method is attractive for the separation of small particles and fragile floes. To date, electroflotation has been applied to effluent treatment and sludge thickening. However, because of their bubble generation capacity, these units are found to be economically attractive for small installations in the flow-rate range of 10 to 20 mVh. In this work, atmospheric particles (PM 10 and PM 2.5) were collected by a dichotomos air sampler. Several leaching procedures were investigated for decomposition of heavy metals. The digests were pre-concentrated with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate. The determinations were canted out on a Vartan Model AA-220 atomic absorption spectrometer. The instrarment was equipped with a GTA-110 graphite furnace system. Table 1 shows the concentrations of heavy metals associated with PM 10 and PM 2.5 particles. Table 1. Applicability/Limitations Fluidized beds require frequent attention for maintenance and cleaning purposes. This treatment is ideal for slurries and sludges but not for bulky or viscous wastes. The waste particles should be of a certain size and be homogeneous. Wastes must have a low sodium content and a low heavy metal content. Flocculation and sedimentation arc two processes used to separate waste streams that contain both a liquid and a solid phase. Both are well-developed, highly competitive processes, which arc oflcii used in the complete treatment of waste streams. They may also be used instead of, or in addition to, filtration. Some applications include the removal of suspended solid particles and soluble heavy metals from aqueous streams. Many industries use both processes in the rcmowal of pollutants from their wastewaters. These processes work best when the waste stream contains a low concentration of the contaminating solids. The name dust , is used in a variety of ways, and with different meanings. These range from the material that accumulates on the earth s surface, such as on streets and in living and working environments, to the particulate material suspended in the atmosphere. In this paper I wish to consider these two materials in terms of their chemical composition, sources and relationship between them. The names used for the two materials will be surface dust and atmospheric dust . The word aerosol may also be used for atmospheric dust but it more properly applies to the finer particles of atmospheric dust and includes liquid aerosol (i). Botfi surface and atmospheric dusts are increasingly seen to be a hazard to human beings as they are a source of intake of toxic materials such as heavy metals.
