Cyclone mist eliminators and collectors have virtually the same efficiency for both liquid aerosols and solid particles. To avoid reentrainment of the collected liquid from the walls of the cyclone, an upper limit is set to the tangential velocity that can be used. The maximum tangential velocity should be limited to the inlet velocity. Pipe-type electrostatic precipitators are used to collect liquid aerosols (e.g., mists and fogs). They are also used in applications which require water flushing of collection electrodes. A venturi scrubber is a venturi-shaped air passage with water introduced just ahead of or into the venturi throat. The liquid-gas contact is at a maximum in the venturi throat. The relative velocity between gas and liquid aerosol droplets is high, with the gas velocities in the range of 50-100 m/s. The particles are conditioned in the throat, and condensation is the important collection mechanism. The name dust , is used in a variety of ways, and with different meanings. These range from the material that accumulates on the earth s surface, such as on streets and in living and working environments, to the particulate material suspended in the atmosphere. In this paper I wish to consider these two materials in terms of their chemical composition, sources and relationship between them. The names used for the two materials will be surface dust and atmospheric dust . The word aerosol may also be used for atmospheric dust but it more properly applies to the finer particles of atmospheric dust and includes liquid aerosol (i). Botfi surface and atmospheric dusts are increasingly seen to be a hazard to human beings as they are a source of intake of toxic materials such as heavy metals.
