Fatty Held—Peptide Condensates. These proteia detergents are reaction products of fatty acid chlorides and hydrolyzed proteias. They are used ia shampoos because of their mildness on skin, hair, and to eyes when used alone or ia combination with alkyl surfactants (8). [Pg.450]

The differences in the amino acid chemistry of the hide coUagen and the hair keratin are the basis of the lime-sulfide unhairing system. Hair contains the amino acid cystine. This sulfur-containing amino acid cross-links the polypeptide chains of mature hair proteins. In modem production of bovine leathers the quantity of sulfide, as Na2S or NaSH, is normally 2—4% based on the weight of the hides. The lime is essentially an unhmited supply of alkah buffered to pH 12—12.5. The sulfide breaks the polypeptide S—S cross-links by reduction. Unhairing without sulfide may take several days or weeks. The keratin can be easily hydrolyzed once there is a breakdown in the hair fiber stmcture and the hair can be removed mechanically. The coUagen hydrolysis is not affected by the presence of the sulfides (1—4,7). [Pg.83]

The major textiles before the 1920s were wool (animal hair), cotton (a seed pod), and silk (a protein used for making cocoons). The silk spider also had a clever device in its abdomen for expelling a gel in a sac through a spinneret where reactions with air made a solid fiber with a uniform cross section. Malathion is an organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitor that is hydrolyzed and inactivated by plasma carboxylesterases much faster in humans than in insects, thereby providing a therapeutic advantage in treating pediculosis (see Chapter 7). Tretyakov and Filimonov (219) describe a coordinative interaction between benzonitrile and aprotic sites on magnesium oxide, and Zecchina et al. (256) came to the same conclusion for the adsorption of propionitrile, benzonitrile, and acrylonitrile on a chromia-silica catalyst. Chapman and Hair (257) observed an additional chemical transformation of benzonitrile on alumina-containing surfaces, which they describe as an oxidation. Knozinger and Krietenbrink (255) have shown that acetonitrile is hydrolyzed on alumina by basic OH- ions, even at temperatures below 100°C. This reaction may be described as shown in Scheme 2. The surface acetamide (V) is subsequently transformed into a surface acetate at higher temperatures. Additional reactions on alumina are a dissociative adsorption and polymerizations (255) analogous to those observed for hydrogen cyanide by Low and Ramamurthy (258), and a dissociative adsorption. Thus, acetonitrile must certainly be refused as a probe molecule and specific poison. [Pg.233]

In 1980, Klug reported a method to detect morphine in head hair of drug abusers by TLC. He dissolved the hair in sodium hydroxide and hydrolyzed the solution with HCL. He extracted the solution with amyl alcohol and separated the components by TLC. Detection and quantitation were made by fluorimetry. The findings were between traces and 4 ng/mg. A HPTLC method was used to determine morphine in human hair. From 20 to 200 mg of hair were washed four times with water to remove surface contamination. Then the hair was incubated in sodium hydroxide and subsequently in HCL at 80°C in both cases. After SPE (type "Extrelut 3"/Merck) the solution was dansylated, analyzed by HPTLC (methanol (MeOH)/ammonia 99 1), and quantitated by densitometry. [Pg.101]

In studies performed by Arnold " and Sachs and Arnold, hair samples were treated with a solution of 1 M NaOH and boiled until the hair disintegrated. The hydrolyzed sample was neutralized with 1 M HCl. The same approach was employed by Kintz and Mangin. Hair digests were analyzed directly by the enzyme multiplied immunoassay technique (Emit , Syva Corporation, Palo Alto, CA) and fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA, Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL). [Pg.158]

Nakahara et al. studied the disposition of 6-AM in monkey and human hair. 6-AM and morphine were present in all hair samples, and heroin was not detected. In addition, the concentration of 6-AM was greater than the concentration of morphine. Nakahara et al. also evaluated the total morphine content (heroin and 6-AM were hydrolyzed to morphine) in monkey hair following subcutaneous administration of heroin (2.5 mg) and morphine (10 mg). Although the morphine dose was 4 times greater than the heroin dose, the mean morphine concentration was only about two thirds of that found following heroin administration. The results indicate that heroin and 6-AM are incorporated more readily into hair than morphine. Based upon this information, the theoretical distribution of heroin and its metabolites in hair is illustrated in Figure 6. [Pg.172]
