Nicotine is most often used in replacement therapy for tobacco addiction, but also has some potential uses to treat other conditions. It has been helpful in stopping bleeding in ulcerative colitis. Nicotine gum is being tested in conjunction with Tourette syndrome where it has been seen to lessen the severity and frequency of tics. The patches may cause skin irritation, which is characterized by erythema, pruritus, edema, and rarely, vesicles. The nasal spray may cause irritation of the nasal mucosa, sneezing, coughing, and lacrimation, although tolerance to these effects develops rapidly with continued use. Side effects from the inhaler include mild mouth and throat irritation and coughing (181). [Pg.451]
