Definitive diagnosis of sarcoidosis requires both a consistent clinical or radiologic appearance and biopsy-proven granulomata without bacterial or fimgal involvement. The classic pathologic finding in sarcoidosis is the epithelioid granuloma. An abnormal chest film is... [Pg.631]

Mucolipidoses are characterized by a combined metabolic disorder of mucopolysaccharides, lipids, and glycoproteins. Lysosomal storage and foamy swollen Kupffer cells with hepatomegaly may be seen. In some of the numerous types, the underlying enzymatic defects have not yet been detected. Type II is also called Leroy syndrome (J.G. Leroy et al., 1967). Due to distinctive cytoplasmic inclusions in fibroblast cultures, this disorder is also known as inclusion cell disease (J.G. Leroy et al., 1971). Foamy altered stellate cells, macrophages and also epithelioid foam cell granulomas are found. [Pg.602]

Sarcoidosis is a primary multisystemic, granulomatous disease of (still) unknown aetiology with enhanced immunity at the site of manifestation. The lungs and the intrathoracic lymph nodes are nearly always affected. In many cases, the extrathoracic organs are involved as well. Sarcoidosis is characterized by the presence of epithelioid cell granulomas, which do not show caseous changes. [Pg.764]

The liver shows vasculitis with necrotizing epithelioid cell granulomas. Non-specific reactive hepatitis is also present. Therapy is with cyclophosphamide (1-2 mg/kg BW/day). We have given an extensive description of this clinical picture based on 132 cases in the literature as well as on our own experience. (84)... [Pg.820]

Bone marrow biopsy in a patient taking amiodarone 100 mg/day showed multiple non-caseating epithelioid granulomata, which resolved 3 months after the withdrawal of amiodarone in a 67-year-old man (167). Similar granulomas were found in a 77-year-old woman who had taken amiodarone 100 mg/day for many years and had thrombocytopenia the bone marrow contained an increased number of megakaryocytes. Her platelet count normalized 1 month after... [Pg.159]

Lennert lymphoma is another T-cell lymphoma that can resemble CHL because of the presence of FI/RS-like cells, eosinophils, and plasma cells. Small clusters of epithelioid histiocytes resembling granulomas are a distinctive feature. In Lennert lymphoma, the FI/RS-like cells express a CD4+ T-cell phenotype. ... [Pg.146]

Fig. 167. Type A epithelioid cells with much rough surfaced endoplamic reticulum and type B epithelioid cells showing vesicles of different sizes from a Marbagelan -induced (7 days) resorption granuloma (block 171) of a male Sprague-Dawley rat (No. 10). Animal treated for 14 days with intra-gastric application of 15 mg carbocromene per kg body weighty day. Perfused under pentobarbital anaesthesia (30 mg g) from the abdominal aorta with 2.5 % glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M sodium cacodylate buffer (pH 7.4). Postfixation with 1 % osmium tetroxide in cacodylate buffer. Embedded in Epon 812 and sectioned at 50 nm. Lead citrate and uranyl acetate. Plate 2850... Fig. 167.
