Epithelioid cell

The one present exception to this is hlstidase, an enzyme characteristic of epithelial cells. In this instance, it has been possible to select clones of epithelioid cells from the mixed cell population of the amniotic fluid cell cultures and to analyse them for this enzyme (55).

As the fatty streak enlarges over time, necrotic tissue and fiee lipid accumulates, surrounded by epithelioid cells and eventually smooth muscle cells, an advanced plaque with a fibrous cap. The plaque eventually begins to occlude the blood vessel, causing ischemia and infarction in the heart, brain, or extremities.

Sarcoidosis is a primary multisystemic, granulomatous disease of (still) unknown aetiology with enhanced immunity at the site of manifestation. The lungs and the intrathoracic lymph nodes are nearly always affected. In many cases, the extrathoracic organs are involved as well. Sarcoidosis is characterized by the presence of epithelioid cell granulomas, which do not show caseous changes. 

The liver shows vasculitis with necrotizing epithelioid cell granulomas. Non-specific reactive hepatitis is also present. Therapy is with cyclophosphamide (1-2 mg/kg BW/day). We have given an extensive description of this clinical picture based on 132 cases in the literature as well as on our own experience. (84)...

White " has observed large proliferation of epithelioid cells after the injection in the footpad of guinea-pigs of 40 ug of wax D, using water-oil emulsions. The same proliferation is also found in popliteal lymph glands. 

The basement membrane has collagen and glycoproteins as its major constituents. Anionic regions present on the basement membrane influence the filtration of molecules. The juxtaglomerular apparatus located at the hilus of the glomerulus consists of three parts. These are the macula densa, which is a small segment of the distal tubule near the afferent arteriole, the epithelioid cells, which are the site of renin synthesis, and the lacis cells located in the region between the macula densa and the afferent and efferent arterioles (Fig. 3).
