Gold maximum

On the other hand, Gold shows large relativistic effects (the Gold maximum — see eg. [21]). In fact, it has been explicitly demonstrated that for Au relativistic and arc-effects are nonadditive [22]. This is most obvious for its electron affinity While a nonrelativistic Cl-calculation [23] gives a value of 1.02 eV and a fully relativistic Coupled-Cluster calculation [22] yields 2.28 eV, the corresponding nonrelativistic and relativistic Hartree-Fock values are 0.10 eV [22] and 0.67 eV, respectively. Thus immediately the question arises to which extent the GGA s failure for metallic Au is due to the neglect of relativistic arc-contributions in Exc[n. ... [Pg.210]

This destabilization may lead, in turn, to an indirect stabilization of the next higher s and p shells with spatial extent similar to the d shell in question. This situation occurs in the case of the late transition metals and leads to the gold maximum of relativistic effects and the unusually large relativistic effects in the elements of groups 10-12. If the d shell is only weakly occupied, as is the case in the early transition metals, the direct effect on the s and p shells is partly balanced by the indirect effect on those shells, and the relativistic effects are generally much smaller. [Pg.90]

The first striking feature in figure 3 is the enormous PCE in AuCl reflecting the gold maximum of relativistic effects also with respect to property calculations. The absolute amount of the EFG PCE is larger than the relativistic contribution ( ) to the property and nearly as large as the correlation contribution underlining the importance of PCE-free calculations. In copper and silver the PCE is also comparable to the... [Pg.327]

Element 112 is the heaviest element discovered so far, with a half-life of approximately 240 ps for isotope 277. With a closed shell electron configuration of [Rn]5f 6s 6p 6d 7s element 112 is the last member of the fourth series of transition elements. The ratio of (r>R to (r>NR for the 7s orbital of element 112 is the smallest of all the seventh row elements suggesting that the gold maximum of relativistic effects may move from Group 11 to Group 12 in the fourth series of transition elements. The large relativistic stabilization of its valence 7s orbital combined with its closed shell electron configuration has led to the prediction that element 112 will be... [Pg.2492]

Possible tape materials include polyimide, polyester, polyethersulfone (PES), and polyparabanic acid (PPA) (18). Of these, polyimide is the most widely used material because its high melting point allows it to survive at temperatures up to 365°C. Although polyester is much cheaper than other materials, its use is limited to temperatures less than 160°C. PES and PPA, on the other hand, are half as cosdy as polyimide, and can survive maximum short-term temperatures of 220 and 275°C, respectively. PES has better dimensional stabiUty than polyimide, absorbs less moisture, and does not tear as easily however, it is inflammable and can be attacked by certain common solvents. Table 7 Hsts various plastic tapes and their properties. Common bump materials are gold, copper, and 95% Pb/5% Sn solder (see Tables 6 and 8 for properties see also References 2 and 21). [Pg.529]

Rhodium was about three times the price of gold through 1988—1989 until skyrocketing to 74/g ( 2300/troy oz) in early 1990. Thus precious metal catalyst costs requite an absolute minimum level of use and maximum number of catalyst recycle uses when batch processing is employed. Starting material contaminants may effect catalyst poisoning, though process routes to overcome this by feed stream pretreatment may be devised (37,60). [Pg.211]

Silicon is soluble in aluminum in the solid state to a maximum of 1.62 wt % at 577°C (2). It is soluble in silver, gold, and 2inc at temperatures above their melting points. Phase diagrams of systems containing silicides are available (2,3). [Pg.535]

Urokinase (from human urine) [9039-53-6] Mr 53,000, [EC 3.4.21.31]. Crystn of this enzyme is induced at pH 5.0 to 5.3 (4") by careful addition of NaCl with gentle stirring until the soln becomes turbid (silky sheen). The NaCl concentration is increased gradually (over several days) until 98% of saturation is achieved whereby the urokinase crystallises as colourless thin brittle plates. It can be similarly recrystd to maximum specific activity [104K CTA units/mg of protein (Sherry et al. J Lab Clin Med 64 145 1964)]. [Lesuk et al. Science 147 880 1965 NMR Bogusky et al. Biochemistry 28 6728 1989.] It is a plasminogen activator [Gold et al. Biochem J 262 1989 ]. [Pg.573]

Bursting discs may be fabricated of gold, silver, platinum or palladium. The recommended maximum temperatures for continuous use are 80 C for gold, 150 C for silver, 300 C for palladium and 450 C for platinum. Figure 6.6 gives bursting pressure/disc thickness data for these metals and for aluminium and nickel. [Pg.936]

The hardness of such coatings may reach a maximum of about 400 Hy as compared with approximately 50 Hy for a soft gold deposit. A series of corrosion studies in industrial and marine atmospheres by Baker" has indicated that the protective value of hard gold coatings is comparable with that of the pure metal, and that a thickness of only 0-002 5 mm gives good protection to copper base alloys during exposure for six months. [Pg.560]

Let us consider first the low-energy fission of the lighter fissionable elements, in the neighborhood of Pb208. These elements (gold, thallium, lead, bismuth), when bombarded with particles such as 20-Mev deuterons, undergo symmetric fission, the distribution function of the products having a half width at half maximum of 8 to 15 mass-number units (20). [Pg.822]

Along the same lines it was advocated that colors be read at the absorption maximum rather than at some other convenient point. An example of this is the increase in absorbance one obtains when analyzing for bromide by means of gold chloride (18). As can be seen from Figure 14, the peak with gold bromide increases by a factor of more than 2 when the color is extracted into octanol and read at its absorption maximum (18). [Pg.113]

Another property that should be present in this type of complex is photoluminescence in recent decades this has attracted the attention of many gold researchers. It may well be possible, that many older complexes might also be photoluminescent but have simply not been studied.
