Going back in time

Looking back on things, you recall those good times with close friends and what you did when you were all younger — by two years or ten years or more. Just as with adding years in word problems, when you have so many years ago in a problem, you subtract the same number of years from each age involved in the situation. [Pg.206]

The Problem Today, Ernest s age is four years more than twice Christine s age. Three years ago, the sum of their ages was 31. How old is Christine right now  [Pg.206]

Let x represent Christine s age right now. That means that Ernest s age is represented by 4 + 2x. To adjust for three years ago, you subtract 3 from each age, so Christine was x - 3 and Ernest was 4 + 2x-3 = 2x + 1 years old. The sum of those two ages, three years ago, was 31. The equation and solution are  [Pg.206]

With multiple births comes multiples of the same age. Each person involved has his age adjusted in the same way. [Pg.206]

The Problem Three years ago, the sum of the ages of the quintuplets and their older sister was 155. If Sis is five years older than her siblings, then how old are the quints today  [Pg.206]

It is the central part of modern Dialectics - the soul of all knowledge which is truly scientific - as taught by Hegel Encyclopaedia of the philosophical scienceSi 1830) and Engels [Dialectics of nature, 1879). And, to go back in time even further, combined opposites - Yin and Yang - are central to old Chinese philosophy and ancient popular wisdom. [Pg.131]

Going back in time some 50 years, laboratory equipment was almost all manually operated and often very dependent on the skill of the operator. The greatest change in test laboratories since then, and the rubber laboratory is no exception, is the improvements made to apparatus by the introduction of automation and, in particular, the application of computers to control tests and handle the data produced. These developments can and do influence the test techniques which are used, for example by allowing a difficult procedure to become routine and, hence, increase its field of application. However, advances in instrumentation and data handling are primarily noticed as... [Pg.20]

We can go back in time to some very famous work by Cram which led him to deduce his famous rule.6 Reaction of either diastereoisomer of the (racemic) tertiary alcohol 39 with acid gives the same mixture of alkenes in which the trans alkene -40 predominates (>50 1) to a very great extent. The elimination is El via the tertiary carbocation 43. [Pg.227]

In any event we can learn a lot about the general shape of the solutions of these equations. We observe first that, as we go back in time and 4 increases, n will decrease for dnjdS, is certainly negative. Hence either it will vanish for some 4 or will go asymptotically to zero. By Eq. (98) it must vanish on or be asymptotic to the line... [Pg.160]

Of course, he can still do his job without knowing any of these things. His hiring and evaluations won t immediately depend on it. But in the end, understanding the broader issues involved in drug discovery will not only answer such questions but will also add value to the contributions he s able to make to the search for new medicines. To get that kind of big picture of what s going on, we need to go back in time a bit (history) and look a little farther... [Pg.1]

We shall then go back to some suitably remote time in the past and proceed to the tejrminal date rather rapidly. In going back in time, let us, however, make a stop at 1909. In his Nobel Award address of that year, Wilhelm Ostwald said "The... [Pg.3]

Let us go back in time, more precisely to 2005 at that time, the stereo-stmcture of mycolactone was established and a single total synthesis had been reported by Professor Kishi. But nothing was known about the mode of action of this seductive macrolide, besides the fact that it was a very potent cyto-pathic and immunosuppressive agent. Moreover, the biosynthesis of mycolactone had just been deciphered by the team of Cole (2004) " from the Institut Pasteur (Paris). A blossoming of chemical biology investigatirMis in the field of M. ulcerans infection was just around the comer. [Pg.89]

Jeannie once talked with Jamie about the prime directive from Star Trek When you go back in time, you can t move a rock on a planet or you ll change its history forever. And Jamie said, "Well, you can move the rocks on my planet anytime you want."... [Pg.236]

Obviously, that was many years ago, but I would like to be able to go back in time and facilitate a kaizen blitz event to reduce the risks associated with that job. I am sure the kaizen team would have experimented with new layouts that would position the pallet closer to the spool discharge point, small roller dollies or hoists to transport the spools, protective shin guards, and many other ideas to make the task both safer, easier, and, therefore, faster. One thing I understand for sure is that I cannot change the past, but... [Pg.107]

Time-reversibility of irreversible processes sounds paradoxical and requires some explanation (Yablonsky et al., 2011b). The most direct interpretation of time-reversing is to go back in time. This means taking a solution of the dynamic equations x t) and checking whether x(—t) is also a solution. For microscopic dynamics (the Newton or Schrbdinger equations), we expect this to be the case. Nonequilibrium statistical physics combines this idea with the description of macroscopic or mesoscopic kinetics by an ensemble of elementary processes (reactions). The microscopic reversing of time at this level turns into reversing of arrows the reaction a, A, —> Eft , transforms into... [Pg.164]

As noted in the introduction to this chapter, a system that forced consumers to bear all of the liability associated with water-related lead poisoning might nominally have worked if it were predicated on good information. If consumers were able to discover for themselves with relative ease the possible dangers of lead in their particular locality, they could have chosen to use lead in those environments where water was not unduly corrosive, and avoided lead in those places where water supplies had the capacity to act on lead. Although it is not possible to go back in time and survey water consumers across the world about their... [Pg.149]

Going back in time a little bit, the specific research of LCDs was started in Sharp around April of 1969. The development of the flat cathode-ray tube was halted after the production and demonstration of a prototype in 1969. One of the engineers, Shunichi Shirokawa, started exploratory research of the LCD as the next research topic. [Pg.6]
