Museum collections are a tremendous and still largely underutilized resource for molecular systematic studies. The large research collections in the world contain huge amounts of material amenable to molecular analysis that may be otherwise unavailable due to extinction or collection difficulties. This can be especially acute in higher level studies of geographically diverse taxa. Collections can make possible, in time and resources, studies for which it would take years to gather material. 

Table 7.1 shows the diverse nature of the businesses. Each of these operating segments has very different needs for different types of external collaborations. In addition to business diversity, geographic diversity also plays a role. In 1998, 40 percent of Dow s sales were from the United States, 35 percent from Europe, and 25 percent from the rest of the world.

The PCA on the data regarding all the Antarctic sediments (1987-1992) gives a significant correlation between the elements (the first three components account for 62.3% of the total variance). In Figure 8.5, which shows the first two principal components, it can be seen that the second component describes the variability of elements. The Cu-Mn-Ni, Fe-Pb and Cr-Zn correlations are particularly evident. The sampling sites instead do not show any appreciable correlation, indicating that there is no geographical diversity between the samples.

To achieve a yes score, the CER should discuss the environmental impact from all parts of the reporting group. The importance of the presence of social responsibility reporting is underpinned by the anticipated move towards sustainability reporting, which will require a consideration of social issues. It is a very subjective EPI. To obtain a yes rating, there must be evidence in the CER of company expenditure on social and community issues or projects, over and above that which would normally be expected to maintain good public relations. It is expected that two or three separate projects or initiatives will be reported, but those included must reflect the geographical diversity of the company. 

Site coverage there is little discussion on specific sites, but a yes score has been awarded since there are a number of photographs with captions, which appear to reflect the geographical diversity of the company. 

The molecular studies are performed with the objectives of developing methods for obtaining insights into the composition of microbial communities. Molecular analyses of geographically diverse samples indicate that, besides the occurrence of a probably site-specific microflora, some novel and almost ubiquitously distributed taxa exist, the species of which show a moderate degree of relatedness among each other. As the results obtained reveal similar conclusions, the need to explore novel environments by using the established methods...

As architecturally resilient a system may be, redundancy at component level will not protect the system from catastrophic failure. For example a fire, earthquake or terrorist attack could quickly render an entire data centre useless. Whilst these scenarios are less frequent than component failure the stakes are higher in that recovery from these situations is challenging and the potential for permanent data loss a genuine possibility. A common solution to this is the use of a distributed architecture to achieve geographical diversity.
