Gastro-enteritis

Some early respiratory infections, e.g. pertussis and bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus, as well as some forms of gastro-enteritis may enhance the development of allergic diseases and asthma. [Pg.194]

In the form of decoctions Iceland moss is used to treat dry coughs. Here the antibiotic and bacteriostatic lichen acids may be of significance. A further indication is lack of appetite and gastro-enteritis. [Pg.61]

Permanganate de calcium Permanganato calcico Permanganic acid (HMn04), calcium salt UN1456. Used to treat gastro-enteritis and diarrhea. Antiseptic, deodorizer, disinfectant. Used in the textile industry. Freely soluble in H2O, decomposes in alcohol. [Pg.107]

Because of their antispasmodic effects, tropane alkaloids are also used to relieve spasms of the bowel in the treatment of spastic colitis and gastro-enteritis. [Pg.737]

The investigations pertaining to the Minisink banquet, held at Goshen, N. Y., on October 5, 1911, show conclusively that the Rockaway oysters served on this occasion were wholly responsible for the typhoid and gastro-enteritis cases following this banquet. [Pg.280]

There were 17 well-defined cases of typhoid fever, with one death, and 83 cases of gastro-enteritis (diarrhoea) traced directly to eating Rockaway oysters from Jamaica Bay, floated at Indian Creek, near Canarsie, Long Island, N. Y. [Pg.280]

This investigation comprises a complete study of all the factors which would materially contribute to typhoid infection. Each item of the menu served at the Minisink banquet was carefully considered, and the Rockaway oysters served were the only articles of food consumed by all of those who had typhoid or gastro-enteritis following thiB banquet. ... [Pg.280]

There may be some overlap between these groups. For example. Staphylococcus aureus may be just an indicator of generally unhygienic conditions, or it may produce staphylococcal enterotoxin causing very rapid symptoms (two hours) of gastro-enteritis. Similarly, Escherichia coli can cause an infection, be toxigenic, or just be an indicator of faecal pollution. [Pg.99]

For gastro-enteral administration the following dosage forms are possible, each with their own points of attention in the manipulations before passing down the tube ... [Pg.821]

Probiotics are described as "live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host" (FAO/WHO, 2002). Bifidobacteria are largely used as probiotics in many food products such as yoghurt, milk, infant formula, cheese, and dietary supplements. The probiotic concept was recognized for the first time by Metchnikoff in 1908 when he observed that the introduction of some fermented foods in the diet had beneficial properties on human health. Since Metchnikoff s original observations, various researches confirmed the ability of probiotic strains to exert positive effects on the host s health status, such as immunostimulation, modulation of the intestinal microbiota, cholesterol reduction, alleviation of acute gastro-enteritis, short-chain fatty add (SCFAs) production, alleviation of constipation and the reduction of allergic disease symptoms, lactose intolerance and intestinal inflammation. ... [Pg.44]

Epidemiological pressure is the parameter that to a great extent determines the frequency of outbreaks of febrile gastro-enteritis due to Enterobacteriaceae. Retrospective studies such as those recorded in Table 3 have demonstrated that relatively few outbreaks are caused by consumption of contaminated raw or insufficiently heated items. The great majority of incidents have resulted from the ingestion of thoroughly heated dishes which subsequently became contaminated from the food environment. [Pg.139]

Haemorrhagic intestinal necrosis has been reported in 2 patients in whom digitalis intoxication was present and no other cause could be found both patients died (17 ). Another patient is reported to have developed gastro-enteritis as a result of digitalis intoxication this led to circulatory collapse with subsequent acute renal failure (18 ). [Pg.152]

Acute renal failure in gastro-enteritis caused by digitalis intoxication (in Slovak). Vnitfni Lek., 20,490. [Pg.160]
