Air/fuel ratio control should be by a very simple and reliable system, preferably one control per burner with fuel following air (air primary) so that lack of air reduces fuel. Zone temperature measurement should be by sensors near the product so that the product is the most important variable—not the furnace zone temperature, except in the entry zone where the sensor should see the product and feel the heating gases. Indexing of the load pieces helps to get the T-sensor to get a measurement as near to the product temperature as possible. [Pg.395]

Measured in MJ/m or Btu/ft, the Wobbe Index has an advantage over the calorific value of a gas (the heating value per unit volume or weight), which varies with the density of the gas. The Wobbe Index Is commonly specified in gas contracts as a guarantee of product quality. A customer usually requires a product whose Wobbe Index lies within a narrow range, since a burner will need adjustment to a different fuel air ratio if the fuel quality varies significantly. A sudden increase in heating value of the feed can cause a flame-out. [Pg.108]

When a customer agrees to purchase gas, product quality is specified in terms of the calorific value of the gas, measured by the Wobbe index (calorific value divided by density), the hydrocarbon dew point and the water dew point, and the fraction of other gases such as Nj, COj, HjS. The Wobbe index specification ensures that the gas the customer receives has a predictable calorific value and hence predictable burning characteristics. If the gas becomes lean, less energy is released, and if the gas becomes too rich there is a risk that the gas burners flame out . Table 4 lists the specifications set by Du Pont, the largest U.S. producer of DMF (4). Water in DMF is deterrnined either by Kad Fischer titration or by gas chromatography. Artificial surfaces must be resistant to cigarette bums, vandaUsm, and other harm. Fire resistance is most critically evaluated by the NBS flooring radiant panel test (10). In this test, a gas-fired panel maintains a heat flux, impinging on the sample to be tested, between 1.1 W/cm at one end and 0.1 W/cm at the other. The result of the bum is reported as the flux needed to sustain flame propagation in the sample. Higher values denote greater resistance to burning results depend on material and surface constmction.
