Full-Time Employment

I was advised by a well-meaning professor that once I earned my PhD, I should select one employment sector, such as academia or private practice, and devote my career to it. I decided otherwise and found that my advanced degree enabled me to work in academia, private practice, and government and, later in my career, to function as an independent consultant and author. Graduate education opened many doors for me. [Pg.48]

Demands and expectations change as you move from the world of study to the world of practice. Completing tasks and projects correctly and on time is further complicated by the expectations that the tasks and projects be done within a budget. You may encounter not only new demands and expectations, but find that they are presented with greater intensity. Finally, the rate of change will probably increase. [Pg.50]

The daily and weekly schedule of a typical university student is relatively simple in that so much time is blocked out by predetermined activities and events such as classes and meetings or activities of professional, student government, and other campus organizations. Daily, weekly, and monthly schedules in the engineering and business world are much less repetitive than those of the academic world and are more likely to change quickly and dramatically in response to owner, client, customer, and stakeholder needs. If you haven t already done so, develop a systematic time management philosophy and system, as suggested earlier in this chapter. [Pg.51]

In 1989 I again retired from full time employment into a new position of Scientist Emeritus created by Dow Corning. In this position I still keep contact with Dow Corning, have an office, a laboratory, a secretary, a telephone and mailing address and am free to write, travel, lecture and consult with outside companies. As long as my health allows, I hope to continue active participation in the study of adhesion at interfaces. [Pg.18]

Retire to full-time work Isn t that a contradiction in terms Perhaps, but the fact is that many people retire from large organizations and seek other full-time employment. MSLT data for young adults have also identified the period near 15 30 as a time of increased sleepiness (64). Furthermore, the endogenous circadian rhythm of sleep propensity as derived from a laboratory-controlled, constant-routine procedure confirmed the timing of the afternoon sleepy period to be 13 40 in a midtwenties, full-time-employed sample (56) and about 15 30 in a young-adult student sample (65). [Pg.465]

The core principle of Labour s New Deal for the unemployed is that individuals are guaranteed intensive employment assistance after a particular duration of unemployment and at that point all JSA claimants must be placed in a job or participate in a full time employment activity (where they are no longer classified as unemployed). The only alternative to the New Deals for the unemployed has been in Employment Zones (EZs), which are primarily aimed at those aged over 25 and wholly delivered by private sector organisations (discussed later). [Pg.317]
