Full-Time Employment

I was advised by a well-meaning professor that once I earned my PhD, I should select one employment sector, such as academia or private practice, and devote my career to it. I decided otherwise and found that my advanced degree enabled me to work in academia, private practice, and government and, later in my career, to function as an independent consultant and author. Graduate education opened many doors for me. 

Demands and expectations change as you move from the world of study to the world of practice. Completing tasks and projects correctly and on time is further complicated by the expectations that the tasks and projects be done within a budget. You may encounter not only new demands and expectations, but find that they are presented with greater intensity. Finally, the rate of change will probably increase. 

The daily and weekly schedule of a typical university student is relatively simple in that so much time is blocked out by predetermined activities and events such as classes and meetings or activities of professional, student government, and other campus organizations. Daily, weekly, and monthly schedules in the engineering and business world are much less repetitive than those of the academic world and are more likely to change quickly and dramatically in response to owner, client, customer, and stakeholder needs. If you haven t already done so, develop a systematic time management philosophy and system, as suggested earlier in this chapter. 

THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF PRACTICE MAKE OR BREAK TIME 

Florman (1987) discusses qualities that engineers, by virtue of education and experience, bring to their work and to society. He cites belief in scientific truth, ability to work hard, risk-taking, dependability, belief in order, pragmatic orientation, a democratic tendency, creativity, and openness to change.

Most of the time the program is organized by a person who is in full-time employment in the company in question, but external consultants can also successfully be used to implement a scheme. In 1989 I again retired from full time employment into a new position of Scientist Emeritus created by Dow Corning. With undergraduate research programs reinstituted into colleges and universities, and with expanded opportunities offered by National Laboratories, the one venture that had not been undertaken, except with only a handful of chemical companies as more than a local initiative, was student involvement in industrial research.
