The third Storage method involves the use of the fuel blocking system and the storage of Mark 22 fiiel bundles. The first storage method bounds the third storage method, therefore, no formal probability analysis was made. [Pg.172]

The following examples are presented for individual unit operations found within a fuel cell system. Unit operations are the individual building blocks found within a complex chemical system. By analyzing example problems for the unit operation, one can learn about the underlying scientific principles and engineering calculation methods that can be applied to various systems. This approach will provide the reader with a better understanding of these fuel cell power system building blocks as well as the interactions between the unit operations. For example, the desired power output from the fuel cell unit operation will determine the fuel flow requirement of the fuel processor. [Pg.284]

There have been few synthetic reports employing these monomers beyond the Ballard work, most likely as a result of presumed high cost and monomer availability. However, the performance and stability demonstrated by these materials in fuel cells may spur further developments in this area. The above-reported copolymers are believed to be random systems both in the chemical composition of the copolymer backbone and with regard to sulfonic acid attachment. Novel methods have been developed for the controlled polymerization of styrene-based monomers to form block copolymers. If one could create block systems with trifluorostyrene monomers, new morphologies and PEM properties with adequate stability in fuel cell systems might be possible, but the mechanical behavior would need to be demonstrated. [Pg.352]

Water and sediment usually result from poor fuel handling and storage practices. Water and sediment can enter from atmospheric air, through fuel transportation systems, and from blending operations. Corrosion, filter blocking, injection system wear, and deposit formation can result. A listing of some classes of compounds which can be found in middle distillate fuel is provided in TABLE 3-15. [Pg.60]

Fuel stability additives prevent the formation of gums that can lead to injector deposits or particulates that can plug fuel filters and the fuel injection system. The need for a stability additive varies widely from one fuel to another. Stability additives typically work by blocking one step in a multi-step reaction pathway of gum formation. Because of the complex chemistry involved, an additive that is effective in one fuel may not work as well in another. If a fuel needs to be stabi-... [Pg.53]

Refueling differences exist between sodium-cooled reactors and the AHTR. For the AHTR, refueling temperatures are somewhat higher, the fuel geometry is different, the power density of the prismatic-block fuel-type SNF is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower, the vapor pressures of the liquid salts are much lower than those of sodium, and the liquid salt is transparent whereas the sodium is opaque. This section provides discussions of design considerations for the LS-VHTR fuel-handling system relative to sodium-cooled fast reactors. [Pg.58]

In parallel, KAERl is developing a fuel performance analysis code called COPA, which estimates the thermal and mechanical behavior of a coated fuel particle, a pebble, and a fuel block and the fission product migration through a coated particle and a fuel element as well as the failure fractions of coated particles under irradiation and heating tests (IAEA, 2012). COPA has been improved to treat the behavior of the advanced fuel under irradiation and heating. A consistent calculation system has been built, which can be used to estimate the gas pressure and species in the coated fuel particle under irradiation. A software verification and validation report for COPA will be issued in 2016. [Pg.355]

The introduction of better products is creating more opportunities for POM in the automotive market. A new line of UV-stabilised soot-pigmented POM produced by Ticona, for example, is claimed to be more resistant to UV rays due to a better light blocking system. The new materials, which Ticona recommends for windscreen wiper and fuel tank covers, among other applications, use a combination of UV absorbers and free radicals that the company says ensures far less colour differentiation. [Pg.70]

Plug Power installed a 7kW residential power system that provides electricity, heat, and hot water to a house in upstate New York. Residential fuel cells are in essence miniature power plants that provide electrical power efficiently, reliably, and most of all quietly to a house or to a block of houses. One of Plug Power s fuel cells has cleared a milestone of 10,000h and the company has announced the completion of 52 fuel cell systems, 37 of which are operated on natural gas and the other 15 on synthetic fuels. [Pg.11]
