Functional block diagram

A reliability block diagram can be developed for the system from the definition of adequate performance. The block diagram represents the effect of subsystem or component failure on system performance. In this preliminary analysis, each subsystem is assumed to be either a success or failure. A rehabihty value is assigned to each subsystem where the appHcation and a specified time period are given. The reUabiUty values for each subsystem and the functional block diagram are the basis for the analysis.

Large metabolic charts have been designed to display all the major biochemical pathways. Such charts present a bewildering array of interconnected pathways, making it difficult to appreciate relationships between different pathways. The overall operational aspects of metabolism may be clarified by simpler block diagrams that omit details and focus on functional relationships. The P-diagram format is only one method of function analysis, but it happens to provide a simple, but powerful, way to conceptualize the component function and the elements that affect the function. Block diagrams or process flow diagrams may be equally vaUd, provided that the result derives from an analysis of the vehicle design specifications, an examination of environmental and noise factors, and a clear understanding of the needed responses and how they may fail.

Develop a functional block diagram of the system based on physical principles governing the operations of the system.

The application software is dedicated to the customer needs. It is derived from the requirements and expressed as functional block diagrams, using the System and Software Development Environment. The application software may call pre-existing components from a qualified library.

The programming language is function block diagram (a limited variability language). Code development and testing is a well known process. Additionally, there are several restrictions for safety function programming which are described in the system safety manual in detail.

Before we go further into the FMEA process, it is useful to review what a Functional Block Diagram (FBD) is, as it forms an essential part of the Functional FMEA process. 

What are the system boundaries Specifications (and their family tree), drawings, schematics, functional block diagrams, etc., all contain useful data to help define the FMEA boundaries. 

To facilitate the systematic compilation of the FMEA, it is recommended that each Part/ LRU/System should he linked within a Functional Block Diagram (refer Section 5.1.5 as well as ARP4761 para G.3.2.1) with each block having as few outputs as possible. For each functional block, internal and interface functions should be analysed relative to system operation. 

The Functional Block Diagram for the Level 3 system is extracted from Chapter 1 and repeated in Fig. 5.4 for ease of reference. The FMEA will evaluate the impact of functional failure of each of these LRUs, see Table 5.10 column 2.

Functional block diagrams— Diagrams that illustrate the operation and interrelationships between functional entities of a system as defined in engineering data and schematics.
