The earhest frothing process developed was the Dunlop process, which made use of chemical gelling agents, eg, sodium fluorosiUcate, to coagulate the mbber particles and deactivate the soaps. The Talalay process, developed later, employs freeze-coagulation of the mbber followed by deactivation of the soaps with carbon dioxide. The battery is maintenance-free and the battery housing is completely sealed by welding. In the case of the failure of one cell in a cell string, the failed cell shorts itself, which means the battery can be operated further even cell failures occur. The reason for this behavior is that in the case of cell failures the ceramic breaks and the sodium reacts with NaAlCl4 forming of a sponge of A1, which builds up in the cell between the cell case and the positive current collector. Structured laundry liquids are currently available in Europe and were recently introduced in the United States [50,51]. These products typically contain high levels of surfactants and builder salts, as well as enzymes and other additives. In the presence of high ionic strength, the combination of certain anionic and nonionic surfactants form lamellar liquid crystals. Under the microscope (electron microscope, freeze fracturing) these appear as round droplets with an onion-like, multilayered structure. Formation of these droplets or sperulites permits the incorporation of high levels of surfactants and builders in a pourable liquid form. Stability of the dispersion is enhanced by the addition of polymers that absorb onto the droplet surface to reduce aggregation. [Pg.138]

The use of low flow rates introduces two further practical problems. The first is the inability to maintain stable conditions at the end of the probe, hence resulting in fluctuations in ion current, as experienced when droplets are formed on the moving belt. As the liquid emerges onto the probe tip, it experiences the high vacuum and begins to evaporate, with a consequent reduction in the temperature of the probe tip. Thermostable pectinesterases (TSPE), operationally defined as activity that survives 5 min at 70°C, contribute most to cloud loss in juices at low temperatures and juice pH (26). The percentage of total activity that is thermostable is highly variable and differs in kinetic properties, (22, 26), ease of solubilization (28, 29), stability to low pH (25) and stability to freeze-thaw cycles (23). Some of the variability in reported total PE and TSPE may be related to limitations of current methods to quantify activity. Any processing treatment or assay condition that increases cell wall breakdown or release PE from a pectin complex would enhance detection of total and TS-PE activity. Commercially, PE is inactivated by pasteurization in a plate heat exchanger or during concentration in the TASTE evaporator. [Pg.475]

Two options are being developed at the moment. The first is to produce 1,2-propanediol (propylene glycol) from glycerol. 1,2-Propanediol has a number of industrial uses, including as a less toxic alternative to ethylene glycol in anti-freeze. Conventionally, 1,2-propanediol is made from a petrochemical feedstock, propylene oxide. The new process uses a combination of a copper-chromite catalyst and reactive distillation. The catalyst operates at a lower temperature and pressure than alternative systems 220°C compared to 260°C and 10 bar compared to 150 bar. The process also produces fewer by-products, and should be cheaper than petrochemical routes at current prices for natural glycerol. The first commercial plant is under construction and the process is being actively licensed to other companies. [Pg.53]
