Foundations protective applications

Soil cement may form layers under bituminous or concrete pavements in road structures. It is also used in construction of slope protection, liners for channels or reservoirs and various kinds of stabilization layers under structural foundations. The application of soil cements for construction of local roads in rural regions, particularly in developing countries, is spreading. Usually, the soil cement layers are maintained permanently in high-moisture conditions during service. 

Plastics provide different performance requirement in providing protective liners in many different applications such as building foundations, pipe and tank liners containing corrosive liquids, etc. As an example Fig. 4-13 shows an RP stack liner being inspected prior to installation in a 682 ft. high reinforced concrete chimney (background) of the 1,500-megawatt Intermountain Power Project near Delta, Utah (1985). 

In 1986, Congress passed the Electric Consumers Protection Act (ECPA), which set the foundation for more efficient relicensing of hydropower facilities, enhanced competition among applicants for relicensing, and ensured a balance between environmental interests and the need for hydropower development. 

These foams are used for board stock in commercial and industrial buildings as insulation for internal cavity and external walls, roof, floor, and foundations. Spray-applied foam, covered subsequently with one of a variety of protective coatings, is widely used for laige roofing applications and has limited use as external walls. For residential buildings, the principal use is as external sheathing board.

In foundation insulation, rigid plastic foams are widely used. A covering over the foam provides protection against ultraviolet light and physical damage. The properties of extruded polystyrene foam make it a desirable insulation for foundation applications.

Particular applications of coal tar-epoxy coatings related to concrete and metal protection include tank linings, pipes, foundations in aggressive soils, manholes, sewage works, effluent plants, chemical processing plants and dock and harbour installations. 

We would particularly like to thank Eduard J.
