The four drugs now on the market for treating AD include Aricept by Eisai and Pfizer, Exelon by Novartis, Razadyne by Johnson Johnson, and Namenda by Forest Laboratories. These drugs inhibit the enzyme cholinesterase that is responsible for the breakdown of acetylcholine in the brain. These drugs seem to postpone the worsening of Alzheimer s symptoms for 6-12 months in about half of the people who take them. [Pg.211]

Tularaemia results from systemic infection with the gram-negative bacteria Francisella tularensis. Wild rodents (in particular, hares) and other small-animal populations are the main reservoir of infection. In humans, most cases are sporadic, related to tick bites (Dermacentor) or direct contact with infected animals. Hunters are at greatest risk, but the disease also affects butchers, farmers, foresters, laboratory workers and veterinarians (Evans et al. 1985). The incubation period varies from 1 day to 10 days. The clinical manifestation is usually an ulcerated nodule at the point of inoculation, associated with enlargement and, later, breakdown of lymph nodes. Systemic symptoms and toxaemia may be severe. Minocycline is considered to be efficacious in most cases (100 mg twice per day for 4 weeks). [Pg.184]

Paroxetine has two chiral carbons and is administered as a single stereoisomer. Citalopram is one chiral carbon and is administered as a racemic mixture in Celexa and as the pure S enantiomer in escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro , Forest Laboratories). [Pg.200]

Pickling is carried out in accordance with one or other of several European and American specifications [7,22,23]. It should be noted that the DEF STAN documentation replaces the original DTD 915B (ii) specification of 1956 that was used throughout Europe until recently. The BAC (Boeing) specification and the original Forest Laboratory s Process (FLP etch), used in the United States of America, are similar. [Pg.177]

Another example of chiral switching is that of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant Celexa, which was introduced to the market in 1998 by Forest Laboratories. Celexa is a racemic mixture of (i )-citalopram oxalate and (5)-citalopram oxalate. While orrly the (S) enantiomer has therapeutic antidepressant properties, both enantiomers contribute to the side effects of the drug and therefore limit effectiveness and patient tolerance. In 2002, the FDA approved Lexapro, a new antidepressant derived from Celexa but from which the therapeutically ineffective (R) enantiomer has been removed. The benefits of isolating the active isomer include smaller required dosages, reduced side effects, and a faster and better patient response to the drag. [Pg.410]
