Forced convection heat transfer horizontal flows

Entropy generation of forced convection heat transfer of liquid fluid over the horizontal surface with embedded open parallel microchannels at constant heat flux boundary conditions may be formulated by an integral of the local entropy generation. Embedded open parallel microchannels within the surface can sufficiently reduce both friction and thermal irreversibilities of liquid fluid through slip-flow conditions (Kandlikar et al., 2006 Yarin et al., 2009). [Pg.189]

Chen s method was developed from experimental data on forced convective boiling in vertical tubes. It can be applied, with caution, to forced convective boiling in horizontal tubes, and annular conduits (concentric pipes). Butterworth (1977) suggests that, in the absence of more reliable methods, it may be used to estimate the heat-transfer coefficient for forced convective boiling in cross-flow over tube bundles using a suitable cross-flow correlation to predict the forced-convection coefficient. Shah s method was based on data for flow in horizontal and vertical tubes and annuli. [Pg.739]

In Chapter 5, we learned the foundations of convection. Integrating the governing equations for laminar boundary layers, we obtained expressions for the heat transfer associated with forced convection over a horizontal plate and natural convection about a vertical plate. We also found analytically, as well as by the analogy between heat and momentum, that the thermal and momentum characteristics of laminar flow over a flat plate are related by... [Pg.288]

Men et al. (2014) have conducted experiments on the natural convection heat transfer for a PRHRS HEX in an in-containment refueling water storage tank. Several empirical correlations for the forced convection flow internal to the HEX tube and the natural convection heat transfer outside of the tube in the tank, for the vertical and horizontal portion of the tube, were compared with experimental data. The Dittus-Boelter forced convection correlation and the McAdams correlations for natural convection proved to give the better model of the data. Wenbin et al. (2014) have conducted experiments for the secondary loop of the Chinese Advance Pressurized Water Reactor for validation of the MIS AP20 models and code. These and other papers are in a special issue of the Science and Technology of Nuclear Installations journal published in 2014 as indicated by the cited references. [Pg.495]

The heat transfer coefficient of boiling flow through a horizontal rectangular channel with low aspect ratio (0.02-0.1) was studied by Lee and Lee (2001b). The mass flux in these experiments ranged from 50 to 200 kg/m s, maximum heat flux was 15 kW/m, and the quality ranged from 0.15 to 0.75, which corresponds to annular flow. The experimental data showed that under conditions of the given experiment, forced convection plays a dominant role. [Pg.301]

Introduction. For the problem depicted in Fig. 4.44, the heat transfer by pure forced convection would increase monotonically with Reynolds number along the curve shown. The heat transfer by pure natural convection from the same surface for various Ra is denoted by the horizontal lines in the figure. If Re is slowly increased from zero in the real problem, the measured values of Nu would at first follow the natural convection curve, since the superimposed forced convection velocities are too feeble to affect the heat transfer. If the forced convection assists the natural convection, the Nu curve in Fig. 4.44 will break upward along path A at larger Re and approach the pure forced convection curve from above. If the flows are opposed, Nu passes through a minimum along path B in Fig. 4.44 and approaches the forced convection curve from below. Mixed convection occurs when the heat transfer is significantly different from that for either pure natural convection or pure forced convection. [Pg.275]

Uniform Heat Flux. For laminar flow in a horizontal tube where uniform heat flux is applied at the outer boundary of the tube, the bulk temperature Tb, increases linearly in the axial direction. To maintain the heat flow to the fluid, the wall temperature must remain higher than the fluid temperature, and under these conditions a fully developed natural convection motion becomes established in which velocity and temperature gradients become independent of the axial location. Because the fully developed Nusselt number for laminar pure forced convection is small (Nuf —> 4.36), the buoyancy-induced mixing motion can greatly enhance the heat transfer. [Pg.280]
