Entropy local

Other processes within this system can decrease the entropy locally while increasing the entropy of the universe. A spark applied to the mixture initiates a chemical reaction in which hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water ... [Pg.46]

Plastic waste can be recycled in different ways and it is legitimate to try to establish a hierarchy between the various processes. We propose to use the criterion of entropy creation. Natural systems evolve spontaneously toward an increase in entropy. Living things decrease their entropy locally to ensure their survival. Human beings may therefore have as their objective to limit, to the best of their ability, the increase in entropy (Figure 2.1). [Pg.15]

Our principle seems to be quite different from E. Einstein s early attempt to deduce the distribution function in the stationary state from the variational principle by maximizing the entropy locally, subject to a prescribed energy flow, etc. [Pg.289]

The state of an adsorbate is often described as mobile or localized, usually in connection with adsorption models and analyses of adsorption entropies (see Section XVII-3C). A more direct criterion is, in analogy to that of the fluidity of a bulk phase, the degree of mobility as reflected by the surface diffusion coefficient. This may be estimated from the dielectric relaxation time Resing [115] gives values of the diffusion coefficient for adsorbed water ranging from near bulk liquids values (lO cm /sec) to as low as 10 cm /sec. [Pg.589]

We can now proceed with various estimates of the entropy of adsorption Two extreme positions are sometimes taken (see Ref. 14). First, one assumes that for localized adsorption the only contribution is the configurational entropy. Thus... [Pg.612]

Thus the entropy of localized adsorption can range widely, depending on whether the site is viewed as equivalent to a strong adsorption bond of negligible entropy or as a potential box plus a weak bond (see Ref. 12). In addition, estimates of AS ds should include possible surface vibrational contributions in the case of mobile adsorption, and all calculations are faced with possible contributions from a loss in rotational entropy on adsorption as well as from change in the adsorbent structure following adsorption (see Section XVI-4B). These uncertainties make it virtually impossible to affirm what the state of an adsorbed film is from entropy measurements alone for this, additional independent information about surface mobility and vibrational surface states is needed. (However, see Ref. 15 for a somewhat more optimistic conclusion.)... [Pg.613]

The standard entropy of adsorption AS2 of benzene on a certain surface was found to be -25.2 EU at 323.1 K the standard states being the vapor at 1 atm and the film at an area of 22.5 x T per molecule. Discuss, with appropriate calculations, what the state of the adsorbed film might be, particularly as to whether it is mobile or localized. Take the molecular area of benzene to be 22 A. ... [Pg.673]

In general, it seems more reasonable to suppose that in chemisorption specific sites are involved and that therefore definite potential barriers to lateral motion should be present. The adsorption should therefore obey the statistical thermodynamics of a localized state. On the other hand, the kinetics of adsorption and of catalytic processes will depend greatly on the frequency and nature of such surface jumps as do occur. A film can be fairly mobile in this kinetic sense and yet not be expected to show any significant deviation from the configurational entropy of a localized state. [Pg.709]

This is the result for monatomic fluids and is well approximated by a sum of tliree Lorentzians, as given by the first tliree temis on the right-hand side. The physics of these tliree Lorentzians can be understood by thinking about a local density fluctuation as made up of tliemiodynamically independent entropy and pressure fluctuations p = p s,p). The first temi is a consequence of the themial processes quantified by the entropy... [Pg.724]

Most of the assumptions are based on idealized models, indicating the limitations of the mathematical methods employed and the quantity and type of experimental data available. For example, the details of the combinatorial entropy of a binary mixture may be well understood, but modeling requires, in large measure, uniformity so the statistical relationships can be determined. This uniformity is manifested in mixing rules and a minimum number of adjustable parameters so as to avoid problems related to the mathematics, eg, local minima and multiple solutions. [Pg.252]

The internal friction due to vortices occurs in rapid expansion, diverging, and regulation valves. The entropy generation due to those vortices is taken into consideration in the local resistance. The entropy generation is directly proportional to c- thus. [Pg.766]

The reader is referred to the original papers for detailed analysis, where the various components of entropy generation and irreversibility are defined. The advantage of this work is not only that it involves less approximation but also that it is revealing in terms of the basic thermodynamics. It should also be used by designers who should be able to see how design changes relate to increased or decreased local loss. [Pg.65]

In addition to the entropy term we assume that there is an extra local coupling between the fields via and, in addition to the coulombic coupling which is long range, we assume the existence of a short-range non-local coupling via We can choose several functional forms to... [Pg.810]

Two properties, in particular, make Feynman s approach superior to Benioff s (1) it is time independent, and (2) interactions between all logical variables are strictly local. It is also interesting to note that in Feynman s approach, quantum uncertainty (in the computation) resides not in the correctness of the final answer, but, effectively, in the time it takes for the computation to be completed. Peres [peres85] points out that quantum computers may be susceptible to a new kind of error since, in order to actually obtain the result of a computation, there must at some point be a macroscopic measurement of the quantum mechanical system to convert the data stored in the wave function into useful information, any imperfection in the measurement process would lead to an imperfect data readout. Peres overcomes this difficulty by constructing an error-correcting variant of Feynman s model. He also estimates the minimum amount of entropy that must be dissipated at a given noise level and tolerated error rate. [Pg.676]

As a result of thermodynamic analysis it is shown that protein bonding to carboxylic CP exhibiting a local internal chain structure is determined by the entropy factor, whereas, if the arrangement of flexible chain parts on the protein globule is possible, the energetic component predominates. [Pg.30]
