Other Papers.—Various iron species prepared by the vacuum pyrrolysis of acetyl-ferrocene-furfural resins at 400°C have been studied by Mossbauer spectroscopy. These consist of an amorphous glass-like carbon matrix containing free iron atoms, Fe+ ions, iron clusters, superparamagnetic iron, and ferromagnetic iron.333 The effect of pressure of up to 50kbar on the absorption spectra of five iron(m), two iron(n) and one mixed valence compound has been studied. In six of the compounds, but not in basic ferric acetate or soluble Prussian Blue, the observed pressure-induced bands were assigned to d-d transitions of converted iron(n) for the ferric compounds and to spin-forbidden d-d bands for the ferrous compounds. The charge-transfer band from iron(n) to iron(m) in soluble Prussian Blue showed a blue shift at pressures up to 7.2 kbar.334

It is used to make sulfite paper and other papers, to fumigate fumigant, and to bleach dried fruits. The element is a good insulator. 

Few reports of successful 7V-oxide preparation have been found (48JCS1389, 71CR(C)-(273)1529), whilst other papers refer to many failures in attempted A( -oxidations, and the parent [2,3-f ] compound gives the 6-hydroxy derivative instead of an A( -oxide (63JCS5737). 

Quadronics (L,iquid Dynamics) Extractor (Doyle et al., U.S. Patent 3,114,707, 1963, and others paper at AlChE meeting, St. Louis, February 1968) This is a horizontally rotated device, a variant of the Podbielniak extractor, in which either fixed or adjustable orifices may be inserted as a package radially. These permit control of the mixing intensity as the liquids pass radially through the extractor. Flow capacities, depending on machine size, range from 0.34 to 340 mVh (1.5 to 1500 gal/min). 

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is becoming more popular, as discussed above for building pressures. However, a recent paper found difficulties in the practical use of current commercial codes due to the wide range of user inputs and decisions. - Other papers are exploring alternatives to the standard k- e model typically used in commercial codes today. -" ...

Dezincification of brasses When dezincihcation occurs, regions of the brass become replaced by a porous mass of copper which, though retaining the shape of the original article, has virtually no strength. There has long been discussion as to whether there is selective corrosion of the zinc in the brass, which leaves the copper behind, or whether complete dissolution of the brass occurs, followed by re-deposition of copper. Possibly both processes occur in different circumstances. The mechanism has been investigated and discussed by Evans, Fink", Lucey , Feller" and Heidersbach , and is referred to in many other papers. ... 

Starting with Bohr s version of 1913, the evolution of this model was examined in an attempt to highlight the assumptions and approximations that were made at each stage. As in the case of many other papers in this volume, there is an educational motivation for raising these questions, especially in view of the central role of the atomic orbital model at all levels of chemical education. My suspicion is that many chemical educators do not appreciate the extent to which this model is an approximation and the conditions under which it ceases to be applicable. 

In this section, four other papers may be finally referred to, which, in addition to liquid holdup, deal with various other aspects of liquid flow in trickle-bed operation. 

Triazenes can also be used to investigate the Sandmeyer mechanism proper, as shown in these and other papers from the same group (Ku and Barrio, 1981 Satya-murthy and Barrio, 1983). However, the investigations demonstrate that their modifications allow bromo-de-diazoniations to be performed without an electron transfer catalyst. It is interesting that Galli predicted the borderline character of bromo-de-diazoniation as early as 1981. 

Before discussing Beckwith s data on that basis, a brief mention must be made of investigations by Lown s group (Naghipur et al., 1989, 1990, and other papers cited there) who claim to have observed the formation of benzoxathiete (10.63) and its valence isomer monothio-l,2-benzoquinone (10.64) in the aprotic diazotization of 2-[(2,-acetoxyethyl)sulfinyl]aniline (10.62). Scheme 10-82 is an abbreviated form of the mechanism proposed by the authors. A more detailed experimental study is clearly required. 

Intramolecular hydrogen bonds between sulphinyl or sulphonyl groups and hydroxyl groups have also been described106,107. The IR shifts Vjq in these experiments were found at around 1005-1010cm 1108 U0. Several other papers which describe hydrogen bonds of sulphoxides and sulphones are given in References 111-120.
