Since this is the first occasion we have had to examine the rates at which chemical reactions occur, a few remarks about mechanistic steps and rate laws seem appropriate. The reader who feels the need for additional information on this topic should consult the discussions which will be found in any physical chemistry text.

Instrumentation. Pilot plants are usually heavily instmmented compared to commercial plants. It is not uncommon for a pilot plant to have an order of magnitude more control loops and analytical instmments than a commercial plant because of the need for additional information no longer requked at the commercial stage. One of the critical measurements is torque or shaft power. Styragel columns are compatible with most solvents commonly used in size exclusion chromatography. Exceptions are found on both sides of the polarity scale the use of standard general-purpose Styragel columns with aliphatic hydrocarbons or with alcohols (except hexafluoroisopropanol) and water is generally not recommended. However, it is possible to pack columns in special solvents for special-purpose applications. The interested user should contact Waters for additional information.

If some fields may be empty in the sublevels, all the fields in the main level are required for each entry. A new chiral separation record can be added in CHIRBASE solely if the authors correctly identify both sample and CSP. Since the beginning of the project, our policy has been to contact the authors of all publications containing incomplete, ambiguous or inconsistent data and to ask for additional information. Providing the separations with unique case numbers helps us considerably in this essential task, and also facilitates avoiding redundancies in the database. When chiral separations are reported for the second time in a new publication with exactly the same chromatographic conditions, this is stated in a footnote added in the field comments .
