Food recalls

Assess dietary sodium intake by patient food recall or by spot urine sodium/potassium ratio for appropriate sodium excretion. 

The more chronic trial-regulating activities of the FDA can thus be leisurely learned and appreciated by drug companies. The FDA also has an acute set of actions that companies do not wish to learn the hard way. It is responsible for initiating and enforcing drug and food recalls, market withdrawals, and safely alerts. They have even recalled a particular water used in manufacturing drugs. 

However, because something is a banned substance does not stop some people from using it illegally. It became apparent that some of the dyes had been used illegally to enhance the colour of chilli powder. A contaminated batch was imported from India and was used in the manufacturing process for Worcester sauce, which in turn had been added as an ingredient to many other foodstuffs. This led to a number of food recalls as a result, any chilli or hot chilli foodstuffs imported into the EU must be accompanied by a certificate of analysis declaring the raw material or product free from Sudan red. Thus, foodstuffs will require examination in order to ensure compliance. 

In recent years, there were two reported cases of food adulteration associated with melamine. In 2007, a pet food recall was initiated by pet food manufacturers...

Establish a Recordkeeping System. It has always been important for the food manufacturer to maintain records of ingredients, processes, and product controls so that an effective trace and recall system is available when necessary. 

As stated previously, traceability is fundamental to establishing and eliminating the root cause of nonconforming product and therefore it should be mandatory in view of the requirements for Corrective Action. Providing traceability can be an onerous task. Some applications require products to be traced back to the original ingot from which they were produced. In situations of safety or national security it is necessary to identify product in such a manner because if a product is used in a critical application and subsequently found defective, it may be necessary to track down all other products of the same batch and eliminate them before there is a disaster. It happens in product recall situations. It is also very important in the automobile and food industries in fact, any industry where human life may be at risk due to a defective product being in circulation. 

In most studies, phytoestrogen intake has been estimated by direct methods that evaluate food intake either by recall (food-frequency questionnaires -FFQs) or by record (food diary), and subsequently by composition databases based on information of this kind. Food-frequency questionnaires are widely administered to subjects involved in epidemiological studies. Their validity and reproducibility is considered sufficient when statistically correlated to data obtained from dietary records (a properly-completed and comprehensive food diary) and from analysis of blood and urine samples (Kirk et ah, 1999 Huang et al, 2000 Yamamoto et al, 2001 Verkasalo et al, 2001). In addition to food- or nutrient-based interactions in the metabolism of drugs, it has become quite clear in recent years that so-called dietary supplements including botanicals have the potential to participate in such interactions. The latter observation has special relevance because of the extensive use of such products worldwide ( 12 billion per year in the United States alone), their easy commercial availability (no prescription required), and their common use with prescribed drugs. Furthermore, many people consider such natural products to be safe and free of any bad effects (it should be pretty easy to recall many poisons... 

Class III recalls are those that involve violations of the law, but for which a health hazard is remote. Examples in this case include insect parts or droppings in flour, the marketing of a product without an approved NDA, unacceptable disintegration or dissolution of tablets, or swollen cans of certain food products [23],...

Abstract For most mammals, the ability to detect odours and discriminate between them is necessary for survival. Information regarding the availability of food, the presence of predators and the sex, age and dominance status of conspecifics is odour mediated. Probably because of this extraordinary reliance upon odour cues, mice and rats have developed the ability to learn and remember information associated with olfactory cues as effectively as primates recall visually related cues. As a result, these rodents have become the model of choice to study the neural and cognitive processes involved in olfactory discrimination. In this paper, we describe some of the more ethologically based tasks used in assessing olfactory discrimination and the advantages and disadvantages of the different methodologies employed. 

As pointed out previously, Ts is not a single or unique value, even for a well-defined sample rather, it occurs over a temperature range and is dependent on the measurement method used and the system involved (recall Figure 33). In addition, it is quite possible that complex, multiphase food systems possess more than one Tg. The complexity inherent in many food systems sometimes makes it difficult to observe a Tg value at all (Labuza et al., 2001 Vittadini et al., 2002). 

Improving nutrition is essentially a process of encouraging people to make healthful choices that improve their well-being (Wansink, 2005). What happens, however, when we believe contamination, terrorism, or a genetic incidence threatens a part of the food supply Sometimes crises influence the recall, redesign, and communication efforts of individual companies (such as Tylenol, Perrier, Pilgrim s Pride). Others, such as the threat of mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE) in beef can compromise an entire industry. 

Taco Bell and other food companies recalled 300 products (150 brands of corn chips, taco shells, corn dogs, corn bread, breakfast cereals and polenta), but decided to continue selling taco shells obtained from the same supplier. 

Outcome 2. Suppose, however, that risk attitude is the true driver behind a consumer s reaction to a food safety scare. In such a case, even if probabilities of being exposed to the risk are small, an effective communication of these probabilities will have little influence on a consumer s behavior. Instead, marketers will have to focus on ways to eliminate the risk. This may involve a total recall or an elimination of the risk (slaughtering of all potentially infected cattle or recall of all potentially tainted food).
