Industrial scientists, therefore, hold a very high public trust. There is a need to go beyond the requirements of scientific canons and demonstrate to the lay public that its trust has been upheld. A number of industrial firms have recognized and responded to this need. Wilder, of Eastman Chemical, for example, describes a proactive pollution prevention policy developed in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency.112 This work describes the key role of analytics in helping chemical manufacturers take leadership roles in redesigning processes for waste prevention. Since the analytical laboratory is a principal referee in the production process, there is always a risk that time pressures will tempt some members of the production team to "work the referee". An important function of the chain of command of the analytical laboratory, therefore, is establishing a clear operational policy to ensure that any such pressure does not reach the bench level ...

Procedures for the determination of 11 elements in coal—Sb, As, Br, Cd, Cs, Ga, Hg, Rb, Se, U, and Zn—by neutron activation analysis with radiochemical separation are summarized. Separation techniques include direct combustion, distillation, precipitation, ion exchange, and solvent extraction. The evaluation of the radiochemical neutron activation analysis for the determination of mercury in coal used by the Bureau of Mines in its mercury round-robin program is discussed. Neutron activation analysis has played an important role in recent programs to evaluate and test analysis methods and to develop standards for trace elements in coal carried out by the National Bureau of Standards and the Environmental Protection Agency.

In general, researchers and experts are more common journalistic sources here than politicians. However, none of these groups of stakeholders seem to play a prominent role as opinion leaders in the field (Table 4.4). The content analysis also reveals that officials - quite frequently in the role of specialists - from the three authorities Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (35 hits), Swedish Chemical Authority (31 hits) and Swedish National Food Administration (26 hits) are represented in this material.

The siimples were analysed by fluorescence spectroscopy at the conditions for each specific PAH [5] previously determined with the model compounds. The PAH studied are those listed by the US Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants [6] Fluorene, Benzo(a)Pyrene, Pyrene, Chrysene, Anthracene, Acenaphthene, Bezo(a)Anthracene, Dibenzo(a,h)Anthracene, Coronene, Perylene and Benzo(k)fluoranthene. In addition, Coronene emissions were also reported due to their important role on PAH stabilization at extreme conditions [7]. These 16 PAH were analysed from all runs in each of the four samples.
