Fluorine bromine compounds

There are a number of complex chlorides of three general types M(MnCl2), M2(MnCl, and M4(MnClg). M is monovalent in each case. Fluorine forms only 9M(MnF.) and the only complex bromine compound reported is Ca(MnBt 4H2O. There are no iodide complexes. The anhydrous salt, MnCl2, forms cubic pink crystals, and three well-defined hydrates exist. Aqueous solubiUties of the tetrahydrate and dihydrate ate given in Table 7. [Pg.505]

Particularly the chlorinated compounds have enjoyed range of applications vinyl chloride (chloro-ethene) as monomer for the production of PVC, tetra- and trichloroethenes as solvents for degreasing, and the insecticides l,l,l-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) and isomers of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) (benzene hexachloride). The biodegradation of fluorinated aliphatic compounds is generally different from the outlines that have emerged from investigations on their chlorinated, brominated, and even iodinated analogues. They are therefore treated separately in Part 4 of this chapter. [Pg.349]

As an example, when automotive catalytic mufflers and converters were introduced many years ago, the automobile industry required the petrochemical industry to eliminate lead from gasoline since lead degraded and reduced the effectiveness of the catalyst and caused the destruction of the gasoline. One set of industrial compounds that can harm catalysts are halogens, a family of compounds that include chlorine, bromine, iodine, and fluorine. Bromine, while not prevalent in industry, is present in chemical plants. Freons are fluorine compounds. Silicone is another compound that is deleterious to catalysts. It is used as a slip agent, or a lubricant, in many industrial processes. Phosphorous, heavy metals (zinc, lead), sulfur compounds, and any particulate can result in shortening the life of the catalyst. It is necessary to estimate the volume or the amount of each of those contaminants, to assess the viability of catalytic technologies for the application. [Pg.250]

Many interhalogen compounds of chlorine with fluorine, bromine and iodine are known. These include CIF, CIF3, BrCl, ICl, and ICI3. [Pg.211]

ESCA has been used to determine the molecular structure of the fluoride ion-induced tnmerization product of perfluorocyclobutene [74] and the products of the sodium borohydnde reduction of perfluoroindene [75] ESCA is also used to analyze and optimize gas-phase reactions, such as the bromination of trifluoro-methane to produce bromotrifluoromethane, a valuable fire suppression agent [76] The ionization energies for several hundred fluorine-containing compounds are summarized in a recent review [77]... [Pg.1033]

The gas-phase ionization of 2,4,6-tribromobenzene in the presence of m-fluoropyridine afforded the A -aryI -m-fluoropyridinc adduct from which the biradical cation was generated by loss of two bromine radicals.232 This biradical species was isolated and characterized using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry and its chemical properties are discussed. FT-ICR was also used to isolate and characterize the products of electron ionization of fluorinated acetyl compounds, which included a biradical anion.233... [Pg.161]

The industrial routes to the synthesis of aromatic fluorine compounds, in which fluorine is directly bonded to an aromatic ring carbon, have been previously reviewed [136], In contrast to the synthesis of aromatic chlorine and bromine compounds, aromatic fluorine-containing molecules require the use of specialized chemical equipment and additional safety precautions. The reason for these measures is the toxicity and corrosive nature of fluorine reagents. [Pg.150]

Fluorine also differs from its congeners in its apparent inability to form oxy-acids and oxy-salts. On the other hand, there are some fluorine-oxygen compounds that have no chlorine, bromine, or iodine homologs. Among these are fluorine nitrate, FONO2 fluorine perchlorate, FOCIO3 ... [Pg.211]

The compound BrF can be prepared by fluorinating bromine not with elemental fluorine but with a higher bromine fluoride in a disproportionation reaction (equations 33 and 34). Fluorination of halides (equation 35) instead of elemental halogen is sometimes preferable, leading to purer products. Interhalogen compounds also include astatine ones such as AtCl, AtBr, and Atl. [Pg.745]

Several CFCs find use as chemical intermediates for the synthesis of other fluorine-containing compounds, notably fluorine-containing olefins. Some specialty applications include dielectric fluids, inert liquids, and brominated analogs used as fire extinguishants. [Pg.330]
