Overall balances

Because 1 mol AgCI — 1 mol Cl, the molar solubility of AgCl is given by the equation s = [Cl ]. From the balanced overall equation, we see that [Cl-] = [Ag(NH )2+l in the saturated solution. The equilibrium table, with all concentrations in moles per liter, is... [Pg.594]

The United States produces more than 7 billion kilograms of vinyl chloride annually. Most is converted to the polymer poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), which is used to make piping, siding, gutters, floor tiles, clothing, and toys. Vinyl chloride is made in a two-step process. The balanced overall equation is as follows ... [Pg.385]

The effect of concentration on the rate of a particular chemical reaction can be summarized in an algebraic expression known as a rate law. A rate law links the rate of a reaction with the concentrations of the reactants through a rate constant (jt ). In addition, as we show later in this chapter, the rate law may contain concentrations of chemical species that are not part of the balanced overall reaction. [Pg.1061]

The coefficients of the balanced overall equation bear no necessary relationship to the exponents to which the concentrations are raised in the rate law expression. The exponents are determined experimentally and describe how the concentrations of each reactant affect the reaction rate. The exponents are related to the ratedetermining (slow) step in a sequence of mainly unimolecular and bimolecular reactions called the mechanism of the reaction. It is the mechanism which lays out exactly the order in which bonds are broken and made as the reactants are transformed into the products of the reaction. [Pg.259]

The basic idea of this method is to split a complicated equation into two parts called half-reactions. These simpler parts are then balanced separately, and recombined to produce a balanced overall equation. The splitting is done so that one of the half-reactions deals only with the oxidation portion of the redox process, whereas the other deals only with the reduction portion. What ties the two halves together is the fact that the total electrons lost by the oxidation process MUST equal the total gained by the reduction process (step 6). [Pg.349]

In large trials it could be argued that block randomisation is unnecessary. In one sense this is true, overall balance will be achieved by chance with an unrestricted randomisation list. However, it is usually the case that large trials will be multicentre trials and not only is it important to have balance overall it is also important to have balance within each centre. In practice therefore we would allocate several blocks to each centre, for example five blocks of size four if we are planning to recruit 20 patients from each centre. This will ensure balance within each centre and also overall. [Pg.5]

The preceding invited paper by Sahade (1987) gave a balanced overall picture for the subject matter. I shall attempt to complement his talk in discussing two classes of atmospheric diagnostics of the evolutionary processes in interacting binary systems. These are (I) Abnormal abundances of elements in the atmosphere resulting from the nuclear processes in the stellar interior. (II) Mass flow as a consequence of the evolution of either of the components and the Algol type binaries. [Pg.206]

When antimony was injected, hydrogen production decreased to 58 SCF/BFF, and the load on the compressor was eased. Coke production decreased as evidenced by a decreased load on the air blower and the 17°F decrease in regenerator temperature. As the load on the compressor was eased, the compressor speed controller was effective, and this stabilized the refinery steam balance. Overall, the unit operated closer to steady state, and this helped... [Pg.192]

According to the law of mass action, the rate of chemical reaction at a constant temperature (amount of reaction per unit of time) depends only on the concentrations of the substances that influence the rate. The substances that influence the rate of reaction are usually one or more of the reactants, but can occasionally be a product. Another influence on the rate of reaction can be a catalyst that does not appear in the balanced overall chemical equation. [Pg.347]

Note that the second half-reaction must occur five times for each time the first reaction occurs. The balanced overall reaction is the sum of the half-reactions. [Pg.462]

Identify which of the following reactions (as written) is an anodic reaction and which is a cathodic reaction. Write the balanced overall ionic equation for the redox reaction of the cell. [Pg.651]

Wejiave multiplied the first half-reaction by 2 so that the number of moles of Fe- and Fe will be the same as in the balanced overall equation. We write the... [Pg.535]

We see that the orders (exponents) in the rate law expression may or may not match the coefficients in the balanced equation. There is no way to predict reaction orders from the balanced overall chemical equation. The orders must be determined experimentally. [Pg.656]

What, if anything, can be said about the relationship between the coefficients of the balanced overall equation for a reaction and the powers to which concentrations are raised in the rate-law expression To what are these powers related ... [Pg.698]

Coal substances have complex chemical structures and their compositions are highly variable. For example a carbon/hydrogcn composition in bituminous coal may be represented as about one atom of hydrogen per atom of carbon. For a generic gasification process based on the above coal feedstock, selected as reference carbonaceous fuel, the following (not balanced) overall chemical equation can be written as ... [Pg.44]

The balanced overall equation for the reaction now can be written as shown in Figure 16.3. This equation is the same as the equation for the formation of zinc oxide that you read at the beginning of the discussion on redox reactions. Now you know that it represents the net oxidation-reduction reaction and is the sum of an oxidation half-reaction and a reduction half-reaction. [Pg.558]

Interpreting Write the balanced overall reaction of lithium with sulfuryl chloride. [Pg.610]

Interpreting Write the balanced overall reaction of lithimn with water. What is the oxidizing agent The reducing agent ... [Pg.610]

In the rectification tower, four equations are available from material balances (overall and component material balances) for the separation of the four components. If the feed or input amount and its composition are known, then one has two unknown streams H (head product) and B (bottom product) and three unknown concentrations in each stream. Thus, generally there are eight unknown values for a four component mixture. Only two of these unknown values are to be determined. Thus the material balance of the rectification tower can be evaluated to obtain the top and bottom product rates. The vapor stream in the stripping section can be determined as the vapor stream ascending from the tower bottom. This stream can be taken as constant throughout the stripping section of the tower. This vapor stream plus the fraction of feed that is vapor will yield both the head product stream as well as the reflux stream that will be returned to the tower. The reflux ratio can be determined based on the minimum reflux. There is a method for the evaluation of the minimum reflux. This method will be shown in a later section. [Pg.244]

The principle in the work of progress is to balance the two half-reactions separately and add them together in order to achieve the balanced overall reaction. This we will look into in the following example ... [Pg.153]
