Zinc oxide occurs in nature as mineral zincite. It is the most important zinc compound and has numerous industrial applications. Zinc oxide is the pigment in white paints. It is used to make enamels, white printing inks, white glue, opaque glasses, rubber products and floor tiles. It is used in cosmetics, soaps, pharmaceuticals, dental cements, storage batteries, electrical equipment, and piezoelectric devices. Other applications are as a flame retardant, as a UV absorber in plastics, and a reagent in analytical chemistry. A major application of zinc oxide is in the preparation of most zinc salts. In medicine, the compound is used as an antiseptic, an astringent and a topical protectant. 

The major use (60%) for coloured inorganic pigments, such as iron oxides, is in the construction materials industry. Here they are used to colour roof and flooring tiles, fibrous cement and mortar. Many inorganic pigments are used in coloured baking enamels for metal appliances. Chromium oxide is used in the refractory industry, not for its colour but because of its ability to improve the properties of bricks used in furnace linings. 

Masonry products have been widely used in the construction industry and include building materials such as cementious materials, concrete, brick, tile, stone, grout, and like substances. Driveways, garage flooring, concrete block, brick fronts, fireplaces, fireplace hearths, as well as tiled floor, wall and counter top surfaces are exemplary applications. Masonry surfaces are porous and if left unprotected can deteriorate from exposure to water and they can become discolored. For example, water penetration can cause spalling or lead to discoloration via microbial growth. Tiles and grouts employed in homes come in contact with various foods and liquids, e.g., fruit juice, coffee, oils, ketchup, mustard, etc. that can cause discoloration. 

Use Softener and tackifier in varnishes, floor tile, mbber products, printing ink, adhesives, and waterproofing materials, and in the leather, electrical, radio, paper, and other industries. 

Products from plasticized PVC include flexible sheeting ( vinyl ) and tubing, floor tiles, etc. These raw products, in turn, are used to produce auto upholstery, components of medical appliances, shoe soles, and in the construction and renovation industry. User evidence of the presence of the plasticizer in vinyl products is obtained from the distillation of a small fraction of it from auto upholstery or lining materials onto the inner surfaces of car windows, in hot weather.
