The vacancy is very mobile in many semiconductors. In Si, its activation energy for diffusion ranges from 0.18 to 0.45 eV depending on its charge state, that is, on the position of the Fenni level. Wlrile the equilibrium concentration of vacancies is rather low, many processing steps inject vacancies into the bulk ion implantation, electron irradiation, etching, the deposition of some thin films on the surface, such as Al contacts or nitride layers etc. Such non-equilibrium situations can greatly affect the mobility of impurities as vacancies flood the sample and trap interstitials. [Pg.2888]

Entrainment occurs when spray or froth formed on one tray enters the gas passages in the tray above. The major variable in setting entrainment (E, weight of liquid entrained per weight of vapor) is vapor velocity. As velocity is increased, the dependence of E on velocity steepens. In the lowest velocity regime, E is proportional to velocity. At values of E of about 0.001 (around 10 percent of flood), there is a shift to a region where the dependence is with (velocity) ". Near flood, the dependence rises to approximately (velocity). In this regime, the kinetic energy of the vapor dominates, and the bulk of the dispersion on the plate is often in the form of a coarse spray. [Pg.1413]

Down spouts (or up spouts) are best set flush with the plate from which they lead, with no weir as in gas-hquid contact. Flooding across a column section reflects itself in an increase in pressure drop and a decrease in temperature difference across the affected section. Product quality is also impaired, but it is hoped that the other indicators will allow correction of the situation before major change in product quality. When a column floods, the levels in the accumulator and bottom often change. It can occur that the accumulator fills with liquid carried over while the reboiler runs dry. [Pg.302]

This problem, as with flooding, also impairs product quality. No fractionation occurs in the dry section, so the temperature difference decreases. However, unlike flooding, the pressure drop decreases and stays very steady at the ultimate minimum value. This problem is usually easier to handle than flooding.
