Flock size

There is still significant controversy within the organic poultry sector/ industry about the level of extensification that should be achieved and there are significant differences in standards (especially with respect to flock sizes/stocking densities, level access to the outside and pasture and feeding regimes) used by different organic sector bodies. 

The trend towards larger flock sizes, while often perceived as undesirable from an animal welfare point of view, coincided with more professional practices being introduced into the organic poultry industry, especially with respect to food safety and HACCP based quality assurance systems. However, it did result in a decrease in time spent on individual animals and their welfare. 

This cage-adapted material has shortcomings in terms of behaviour in larger flocks. This manifests itself in an excessive tendency for feather pecking and cannibalism, and, independent of flock size, many mislaid eggs. 

The NAHWOA Recommendations (Hovi 2004) call for the standards to give greater emphasis to biosecurity. However, smaller flock sizes, low stocking rates and access to outdoor environments reduce the potential for other diseases associated with dense populations, high levels of inputs, enclosed environments and restricted movement. 

A UK study showed that consumers bought organic eggs because they were perceived as being healthier, free of chemicals and genetically modified materials, and because they tasted better (Stopes et al.r 2001). In addition consumers expected that the laying flocks were maintained under more humane and improved welfare conditions. This research confirms that consumer acceptance of organic poultry products depends to some extent on the nature of the production system and that consumers expect a land-based production system, particularly one based on a small flock size. 

Note that the minimum flocculation degree value is observed at the same surfactant ratios at which the minimum interfacial tension value is achieved. This makes clear the previously known facts about the increase of the emulsion stability at low y. This occurs, first of all, due to an appreciable decrease in the flocculation degree up to its complete suppression. These phenomena result in an increase in the sedimentation stability both for non-flocculated emulsions (dispersity increase) and partly flocculated emulsions (decrease in flock size and flocculation degree). 

Combinations of two or more of the above steps into consecutive processes, such as spin—draw or spin—draw—texture, reduces manufacturing costs. In addition to continuous-fHament yam, nylon is also offered in staple, tow, and flock forms. Staple is made by cutting crimped continuous-fHament yam into 3—20-cm lengths. In manufacturing, tow is made by combining many yam ends, either flat or crimped, to give a total tow size of 6—111 ktex. 

For Sm, Eu, and Yb, on the other hand, nanocapsules containing carbides were not found in the cathode deposit by either TEM or XRD. To see where these elements went, the soot particles deposited on the walls of the reaction chamber was investigated for Sm. XRD of the soot produced from Sm203/C composite anodes showed the presence of oxide (Sm203) and a small amount of carbide (SmC2). TEM, on the other hand, revealed that Sm oxides were naked, while Sm carbides were embedded in flocks of amorphous carbon[12J. The size of these compound particles was in a range from 10 to 50 nm. However, no polyhedral nanocapsules encaging Sm carbides were found so far. 

The size of the flock is generally limited by the amount of land for manure application. 

Several standard-sized alternative egg-laying breeds are available worldwide. In the USA this includes Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires, Barred and White Plymouth Rock, and Buff Orpingtons. There appears to be a lack of published peer-reviewed research comparing the productivity of these breeds in an organic production system. Many organic egg producers in the USA keep a flock for multiple years and run multiple ages together. The choice of a different coloured breed each year makes it possible to keep track of the age of each of the hens in these flocks.
