A recent patent reported the preparation of a bis-oxalato-borate salt (Figure 9.13). It was claimed that this type of multifunctional salt can provide stabilizer, flame retardancy, and conductivity effects in a variety of polymers.92... [Pg.226]

Boron-based fire retardants have a wide spectrum of applications. They are multifunctional fire retardants. They can function as flame retardants, smoke suppressants, afterglow suppressants, and anti-tracking agents. [Pg.232]

New trends involve the use of nanoparticles in synthetic fibers. Polymer-layered silicates, nanotubes, and POSS have been successfully introduced in a number of textile fibers, mainly poly-amide-6, polypropylene, and polyester. Although they reduce the flammability of these fibers, but on their own are not effective enough to confer flame retardancy to a specified level. However, in presence of small amounts of selected conventional FRs (5-10 wt %), synergistic effect can be achieved. With this approach fibers having multifunctional properties can also be obtained, e.g., water repellency or antistatic properties along with fire retardancy. Most of the work in this area at present is on the lab scale and there is a potential to take this forward to a commercial scale. [Pg.757]

The combination of EC and antistatic finishes, achieved with selected products is important for synthetic microfibre textiles. Other common finish combinations include hand builders, flame retardant and antimicrobial agents, which generate valuable and useful multifunctional finishes. [Pg.84]

Studies of the application of cyclophosphazene derivatives find a broad interest and comprise many areas, such as multifunctional initiators, biological materials, lubricants and flame-retardants. [Pg.212]

Barium metaborate is a truly multifunctional additive which inhibits corrosion, increases UV stability, inhibits mold growth, and has flame retarding properties when used in combination with halogenated materials. The commercial product of Buckman Laboratories is a modified product which contains 90% of active ingredient. [Pg.35]

A more convenient scheme, first proposed by Mascia [14] for plastic additives, is to classify fillers according to their specific function, such as their ability to modify mechanical, electrical, or thermal properties, flame retardancy, processing characteristics, solvent permeability, or simply formulation costs. Fillers, however, are multifunctional and may be characterized by a primary function and a plethora of additional functions (see Table 1.4). The scheme adopted in this book involves classification of fillers according to five primary functions, as follows ... [Pg.14]

Multifunctional concentrate n. A plastic compound that contains high percentages of at least two of such additives as colorants, stabilizers, flame retardants, lubricants, antistatic agents, anti-blocking agents, blowing agents, fillers, etc, that will be diluted in base resin to provide a tailored compound with the desired final concentrations of the additives in the extruded or molded product. [Pg.638]
