The outsert. This is an American idea in which the leaflet is folded down to the height of the container and is held against the side of the container by either a stretch or shrink band or has its flying leaf sealed together and stuck with a heat-fix adhesive or is cellotaped to the container. Let us consider how to determine experimentally the shrinkage internal stresses. An optical system similar to that descrihed in Section 4.2.1 was used to determine the displacement of the free end of the cantilever-fixed adhesive-honded plate. Plates made of aluminum foil 5 X 10 m thick E = 0.7 x 10 MPa) and of steel 10 x 10 m thick (E = 2 X 10 MPa), hoth with areas of 1 x 10 cm, served as substrates. Immobilization. The fixing property of PEIs has previously been discussed. Another appHcation of this property is enzyme immobilization (419). Enzymes can be bound by reactive compounds, eg, isothiocyanate (420) to the PEI skeleton, or immobilized on soHd supports, eg, cotton by adhesion with the aid of PEIs. In every case, fixing considerably simplifies the performance of enzyme-catalyzed reactions, thus faciHtating preparative work. Orifice. Orifice viscometers, also called efflux or cup viscometers, are commonly used to measure and control flow properties in the manufacture, processing, and appHcation of inks, paints, adhesives, and lubricating oils. Viscosity of Coal- Tar Pitch and Change with Temperature. Because pitch is mainly used as a hot-appHed binder or adhesive, the viscosity and its change with temperature are important in industrial practice. Some useful correlations, by which the viscosity of pitch at any temperature can be predicted, have been developed. Eor a fixed amount of braking the amount of wear of automotive friction materials tends to remain fairly constant or increase slightly with respect to brake temperature, but once the brake rotor temperature reaches >200° C, the wear of resin-bonded materials increases exponentially with increasing temperature (26—29). The manufacture of a sandwich fusehead proceeds in the following manner. Brass or other metal foils are fixed on each side of a sheet of pressboard with a suitable adhesive. The pressboard is then stamped into combs of the shape shown in Fig. 10.3 and steps are cut in the tips of the heads.
