FIRST Project

INTA of Spain has since 1990 developed in three steps a PV-hydrogen installation in order to study the feasibility of solar hydrogen production and storing solar energy in the form of hydrogen. [Pg.88]

The electrolyser manufactured by METKON was equipped with an adjustable control unit that allowed automatic operation and different operating modes. To provide optimum direct coupling with the PV field, the control unit could select the number of operating cells as a function of the solar radiation. [Pg.88]

The hydrogen produced by the electrolyser is initially stored in an intermediate buffer of 1 m3 water volume, from which it can be transferred to one of the two storage systems metal hydride storage or pressurised gas (at 200 bar). The metal hydride storage system manufactured by GfE mbH consists of an intermediate buffer, a hydrogen purification unit, a metal hydride container and a cooling water supply system. [Pg.88]

With respect to the fuel cells installed, a 10-kW PAFC supplied by ERC was installed at the end of 1993 that included a methanol reformer to permit operation with methanol so as to allow tests with fuels other than pure H2. [Pg.88]

Lastly, a number of auxiliary systems have been installed for the proper operation of the system, including  [Pg.88]

The first project [9] dealt with the evaluation of the effect of cross-linking degree (c.l.d.) in a series of five gel-type resins, on the diameter of Pd° nanoclusters obtained upon reducing resin-bound Pd centres. In this project c.l.d. was let to range from 1 to 9% mol (Figure 3). [Pg.413]

His basic concept was simple to know how polluted the world is today, one must first learn what the world was like before industrialization. To demonstrate that modern levels of contamination were unnatural, he traveled—literally—to the ends of the Earth. He called his first project A Snow Job. ... [Pg.180]

Equation (8.59) defines the ID interference function of a layer stack material. G (s) is one-dimensional, because p has been chosen in such a way that it extinguishes the decay of the Porod law. Its application is restricted to a layer system, because misorientation has been extinguished by Lorentz correction. If the intensity were isotropic but the scattering entities were no layer stacks, one would first project the isotropic intensity on a line and then proceed with a Porod analysis based on p = 2. For the computation of multidimensional anisotropic interference functions one would choose p = 2 in any case, and misorientation would be kept in the state as it is found. If one did not intend to keep the state of misorientation, one would first desmear the anisotropic scattering data from the orientation distribution of the scattering entities (Sect. 9.7). [Pg.155]

Catalysis and Synthesis in the Laboratory. Research on the practical applications of catalysis was not matched in the laboratory. We began a study of metal and non-metal catalyzed reactions early in our sonochemistry program. Our first project was to develop a convenient method of hydrogenating a wide range of olefins. We chose formic acid as our hydrogen source and found it to be effective. For example, with continuous irradiation, palladium catalyzed hydrogenations of olefins are complete in one hour(44). [Pg.220]

Compounds 5-8 are shown in Figure 2. Our first project will involve the synthesis of 5. [Pg.603]

One of Davy s first projects was to apply the newly invented electric battery to chemistry. The Italian physicist Alessandro Volta had demonstrated the first one only the previous year, 1800, and Davy immediately saw a use for them in his research. Soon after the first batteries were made, it was discovered that the electrical currents that they produced could be used to decompose chemical compounds. For example, if positively and negatively charged electrodes were inserted in water, oxygen was released at the negative electrode and hydrogen at the positive one. This phenomenon is called electrolysis. [Pg.84]

The German COORETEC CO2 Reduction Technologies) concept favours coal gasification with precombustion capture to introduce COj capture into coal fired power plants. The same capture process is suited to produce hydrogen from coal in an environmentally-friendly way. This technical option is outlined in the recently drawn up national vision on hydrogen technologies. The first projects in this area are to be funded in the near future. [Pg.52]

To obtain workable expressions for the perturbative corrections to the wavefunction /k, the full Schrodinger equation is first projected against all of the unperturbed eigenstates lj> other than the state d>k whose perturbative corrections are sought ... [Pg.664]

In 2006, a table-top energy-dispersive XRF (ED-XRF) spectrometer was acquired by the Archaeometry Lab to facilitate non-destructive analysis of obsidian and other types of artifacts. One of the first projects performed on the new XRF spectrometer was the re-analysis of the geological samples from sources in Peru. As a result, it is now possible for the Archaeometry Lab to use either XRF or NAA to successfully determine the provenance of obsidian artifacts from Peru. Due to its light weight, the spectrometer also has the potential to be transported from the laboratory to museums and to archaeological sites for in situ analysis. [Pg.530]

If you will try whither thou hast wrought wisely, take one part of thy red powder and first project it upon 10 parts of thy reserved Sun rays, and it will all become Medicine of Metals, and then project one part of that on ten parts of Mercury, and thou shall see thy Medicine will turn this little star into a bright and perfect shining Sun. [Pg.49]

The disadvantages of the principal component space are that it is more difficult to understand and explain to others, and it is more complex to implement in prediction. Instead of simply using individual X-variable intensities from a prediction sample s response profile (xp), one must first project these intensities onto the A significant PCs in order to obtain the prediction sample s PCA scores (tp) ... [Pg.287]

The first project, gathering eight teams from six EC countries where more than 140 new extractants were prepared and studied, not counting all the precursors and intermediates. Tests carried out with these compounds on simulated and real waste showed the excellent chemical and radiolytic performance of calixarene derivatives. [Pg.202]

The two-dimensional gamut-constraint algorithm first projects all colors c onto the plane at b = 1. Because both the sample and the background are achromatic, the results will be independent of the reflectance R of the sample. [Pg.308]

Stereographic projection provides a convenient way of displaying the angular relations between planes and directions in a crystal in two dimensions. The system involves first projecting planes and directions of interest onto a spherical surface and then mapping the spherical surface. Figure 4.1 illustrates how planes and directions are projected onto a sphere. If an infinitesimal crystal were placed at the center of a sphere and its planes extended, they would intersect the sphere as great circles and their directions would intersect the sphere as points. [Pg.26]

Upon Julian s return to the United States, DePauw University offered him a faculty position and research support. His first project was the total synthesis of physostigmine, an indole alkaloid extracted from the Calabar bean, used in the treatment of glaucoma. Sir Robert Robinson at Oxford University in England was also working on this synthesis. Julian achieved the synthesis of physostigmine, and showed that Robinson s hypotheses about its structure were wrong. [Pg.262]

The most convenient way to plot a projection of an w-dimensional system in an m-dimensional linear projective subspace is to use multiple orthogonal projection, in which the directions of projection rays are parallel to the normal vectors (qi, q>,. .., qn-m) defining the projective subspace. Under this projection, a point is first projected in the direction of qi, then of q/, and so on. A convenient set of canonical coordinates describing the projective subspace is given by... [Pg.344]
