Polyamide monomers

Dick received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Nebraska in 1946 and headed east to join the Central Research Department of the DuPont Company. His first project was to study the chemistry of a polyamide monomer, caprolactam.

After these examples picked up in the main routes to some polyamide monomers, we would like to come back to the synthesis of butanediol. 

The dicarboxylic polyamide, or diacid, is obtained from the reaction of a polyamide monomer with a chain limiter. The molecular weight of the diacid is regulated by the amount of chain limiter present during the reaction. PEA - The highest polar polyester is represented by polyesteramide whieh is synthesized from statistical polycondensation between polyamide monomers with adipic acid. Different commercial grades, named BAK , have been developed by Bayer but the production has been stopped in 2001. Contrary to PLA, PEA polymers have exhibited a negative eco-toxicological effect during composting (Averous, 2004). 

PEAs can be synthesized by statistical condensation copolymerization of polyamide monomers (PA 6 or PA 6.6), adipic acid, and 1,4-butanediol (Scheme 11.4). A variety of amino acids and aliphatic diols, poly(ethylene glycol), or cyclic diols like dianhydrosorbitol or dianhydromannitol have also been used to prepare PEAs [109,119, 120].
