Fire protection practices

Normal fire protection practices and standards recommend fire pumps be tested annually to determine performance levels. Common practice in the petroleum industry is to trend the result of flow performance to prepare predictive maintenance and replacement forecasts. Such forecast can predict poor pump performance and prepare measures to implement corrective actions before this occurs.

Included ia the OSHA regulations are standards for safe work practices such as lock-out/tag-out and confined space entry, personal protective equipment, storage of hazardous materials, welding process, forklift operation, and requirements for fire protection. Basically, all activities within a chemical facihty are covered by OSHA standards. 

The National Safety Council, National Fire Protection Association, and other similar organizations pubHsh technical information that describes general safety practices for use during the testing, handling, storage, and transport of sulfur (21,36—40). Each of these pubHcations include a Hst of references for additional health and safety information. 

Loose asbestos fibers, or formulations containing asbestos fibers for spray coatings, have been widely used in the building industry for fire protection and heat or sound insulation. Such applications used mainly chrysotile or amosite but, because of health concerns, this practice has been discontinued.

It is normal practice in insurance for surveyors employed by the insurance company or the insurance broker to inspect premises that are to be insured and prepare reports for the underwriters. A major part of the survey report is an assessment of the quality of the fire protection relative to the level of hazard in the premises. Obviously, the business being carried on has a considerable influence on the risk of fire or explosion.
