Protocols and clinical guidelines have already been introduced to the ICUs and should be encouraged. 

An early SB or PSV trial should be repeated daily in difficult-to-wean patients. Weaning protocols are necessary to assist junior physicians, especially in ICUs where staff turnover is high. 

WPs may be especially useful when nonphysician healthcare providers play a major role in weaning or when physician availability is limited. 

WPs should be modified to accommodate the setting, the team, the time used for the application of weaning, and the patient s underlying condition. 

Weaning is only a component of management for patients with complex multiorgan conditions.

Priority substances were selected, which are considered to be of particular concern to human health and/or the environment. Before any final recommendation can be made, the entire application must be considered, from a normal operating situation to extreme conditions, including changes to the material under operating conditions.

Consideration of incremental costs shows that a final recommended design does not need to correspond to the optimum economic design, because the incremental return on the added investment may become unacceptable before the optimum point is reached. This chapter deals with methods for determining optimum conditions, and it is assumed that the reader understands the role of incremental costs in establishing a final recommended design. 

The various mathematical methods for determining optimum conditions, as presented in this chapter, represent on a theoretical basis the conditions that best meet the requirements. However, factors that cannot easily be quantitized or practical considerations may change the final recommendation to other than the theoretically correct optimum condition. Thus, a determination of an optimum condition, as described in this chapter, serves as a base point for a cost or design analysis, and it can often be quantitized in specific mathematical form. From this point, the engineer must apply judgment to take into account other important practical factors, such as return on investment or the fact that commercial equipment is often available in discrete intervals of size.

The National Coimcil for Radiation Protection (NCRP) has identified a negligible individual risk level (NIRL) as a level of annual excess risk of health effects attributable to irradiation below which further effort to reduce radiation to the individual is unwarranted. The NCRP emphasized that this level should not be confused with an acceptable risk level, a level of significance or a standard.
