Cartridge filter respirators

B. Protective respiratory gear may be a simple paper mask, a cartridge filter respirator, or a positive-pressure air-supplied respirator. Respirators must be properly fitted for each user. 

Cartridge filter respirators filter certain chemical gases and vapors out of the ambient air. lliey are used only when the toxic substance is known to be adsorbed by the filter, the airborne concentration is low, and there is adequate oxygen in the ambient air. 

Dust/mist filtering respirator Dust/mist respirator, or respirator with dust/mist filtering cartridge, respirator with organic vapor-removing cartridge and pesticide prefilter, respirator with canister approved for pesticides, or air-sup-plying respirator... 

Any particulate filter respirator for dust and mist except single-use respirator or (2) Any particulate filter respirator or combination chemical cartridge and particulate filter respirator for coke oven... 

A respirator that has a chemical cartridge filter and is effective for low concentrations of relatively non-toxic gases or vapors. 

The fiill-face respirator has many attachments that can be incorporated to make it more versatile. As a filter respirator, it can be equipped with filters, chemical cartridges, canisters, and powered air-purifier systems. As an air-supplied respirator, it can be equipped with an air line arrangement or a tank-supplied compressed air/oxygen system, either for closed or open operation. 

Air-purifying respirator A respirator that removes airborne contaminants, such as particulates, gases, vapors and fumes, from ambient air through filtration, absorption, adsorption, or chemical reactions on the media contained in the cartridge or filter. 

Maximum use concentration (MUC) The maximum atmospheric concentration of contaminants in which a respirator cartridge or filter is recommended for use. Can be approximated by multiplying the PEL for the contaminant of concern by the assigned protection factor. 

Powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) A type of air-purifying respirator that utilizes a battery-powered fan to draw contaminated air through the cartridge or filter into the facepiece.

These characteristics have been examined in previous chapters. Now is the time, however, to reconsider them in order to make a proper choice of protective equipment. As we shall see when we come to look at the characteristics of the equipment, it would be dangerous to select a dust filter when a chemical cartridge respirator is needed, or a chemical cartridge respirator when a self-contained unit is needed. Several other considerations, such as those that follow, should be examined. 

Functional characteristics of the employees. The wearing of respiratory devices, except for simple dust masks, can be both physically and psychologically demanding. Even a cartridge respirator without any requirement for a hose connection can be restrictive, the more so in the presence of any obstruction to breathing by a clogged filter. It is important to recognize that cartridge respirators should be used only for protection against those contaminants listed on the filters or cartridges or on their cartons. In particulars, it is important to realize that cartridge respirators do not protect against carbon monoxide, which is a common and dangerous industrial contaminant.
