Lead oxide is used in producing fine "crystal glass" and "flint glass" of a high index of refraction for achromatic lenses. The nitrate and the acetate are soluble salts. Lead salts such as lead arsenate have been used as insecticides, but their use in recent years has been practically eliminated in favor of less harmful organic compounds.

The method of measurement is based upon the observation of the position of the border line of the total reflection in relation to the faces of a prism of flint-glass, into which the light from the substance under in vestigation enters by the action of refraction. 

The double prism consists of two similar prisms of flint-glass, each cemented into a metal mount and having a refractive index n, = 1 75 the fluid to be investigated (a few drops) is deposited between the two adjoining inner faces of the prisms in the form of a thin stratum (about 0 15 mm. thick). The former of the two prisms, that farther from the ttelescope (which can be folded up or be removed), serves solely for the purpose of illumination, while the bordw line is formed in the second flint prism.

TMA measurements have been helpful in explaining the breakage of vials during the warming of frozen solutions of mannitol and other stereoisomers [1.125]. For example, above -25 °C mannitol expands 30 times more than standard type 1 flint glass. Depending on the filling volume and the concentration, 10-40 % of the vials break when filled with 3 % mannitol solution. 

Flint glass contains lead(II) oxide, PbO and is used in lenses because of its low refractive index, meaning that light passing through does not bend very much. 

Babbitt metal is another alloy of lead that is used in the manufacture of wheel bearings that reduces friction. Lead is an ingredient in several types of glass, such as lead crystal and flint glass. 

Immediately mix 1 part of the 20 mg/mL initial solution with 1 part of either Mylanta Double Strength Liquid, Extra Strength Maalox Plus Suspension, or Maalox TC Suspension for a final dispensing concentration of 10 mg/mL. For patient home use, dispense the admixture in flint-glass or plastic bottles with child-resistant closures. This admixture is stable for 30 days under refrigeration at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F). 

Thallium oxide is used in manufacturing high coefficient of refraction optical glass (thallium flint glass). Also, the oxide is used to make synthetic gems.
