Orographic lifting

One of the major effects of acidic deposition is felt by aquatic ecosystems in mountainous terrain, where considerable precipitation occurs due to orographic lifting. The maximum effect is felt where there is little buffering of the acid by soil or rock structures and where steep lakeshore slopes allow little time for precipitation to remain on the ground surface before entering the lake. Maximum fish kills occur in the early spring due to the "acid shock" of the first meltwater, which releases the pollution accumulated in the winter snowpack. This first melt may be 5-10 times more acidic than rainfall. [Pg.152]

Frequently, both kinds of adiabats must be employed to follow the behavior of a parcel of air. A parcel of dry air may rise by its own buoyancy, or may be pushed up by orographic lifting, which occurs when winds meet mountains and are deflected upward. The temperature of the air parcel follows the dry adiabat until water vapor condensation is incipient with further cooling, condensation can occur. If it is assumed that supercooling (a nonequilibrium situation in which air cools below the dew point without condensation) does not occur, the parcel of air then moves upward following the corresponding wet adiabat. Conditional stability refers to conditions under which dry,... [Pg.302]

Orographic lifting. When an air mass moves against a mountain barrier, some of the air is forced to rise. This can result in an extensive sheet of deep stratiform and cumuliform clouds. Lenticular clouds can also form high above mountains and in their lee (downwind locations) within mountain-generated waves. [Pg.79]
