A similar overview of German activities in 1998 is provided in [65]. The German working party on micro-reaction technology is presented, a federal funding program is introduced, and three top-priority research projects are presented. They show the activities at the edge of acceptance by industry. [Pg.21]

Our inventory also showed that funding levels for materials vary widely across differing materials classes. R D on advanced metals received 13% (the largest fraction in 1992), composites were 11%, electronic materials were 10%, and biomaterials were also 10%. The FCCSET process proved enormously successful in focusing the federal program on materials research. [Pg.19]

Many academic and industrial scientists serve as advisors to various federal agency programs in materials science. For example, the evaluation board for the Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory (MSEL) at NIST contains representatives from Bell Laboratories, DuPont, General Electric, Allied Signal, and numerous universities. The private sector would like to improve the interactions at the strategic policy level, but some bureaucratic handicaps must be overcome. [Pg.20]

Chronological Age. Because of this wide variation within the elderly population, it is difficult to devise a catch-all age one must attain to be considered elderly. Within the government, there also appears to be a problem of consistently defining this age group. Table 2, which lists a variety of federally funded programs and their corresponding age criteria, illustrates this point quite well. Table 3 lists what seems to be one of the better classification systems that has been devised [5], As well as being the system currently used by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, it is often implemented in studies that specifically deal with elderly populations [6,7]. [Pg.667]

RCRA Subtitle I regulates USTs that contain petroleum or hazardous substances. A major objective of Subtitle I is to prevent and clean up releases from tanks. Under Subtitle I, U.S. EPA has developed performance standards for new tanks, upgrading requirements for existing tanks, and regulations to prevent, detect, and clean up releases at all UST sites. State UST programs may be approved to operate in lieu of the federal program. [Pg.437]

Although the ability to minimize percolation is a performance criterion for final cover systems, limited data are available about percolation performance for final cover systems for both conventional and alternative designs. Most of the recent data on flux rates have been generated by two federal research programs, the Alternative Landfill Cover Demonstration (ALCD)84 and the Alternative Cover Assessment Program (ACAP). From these programs, flux rate performance data are available for 14 sites with demonstration-scale ET cover systems.5,39,85... [Pg.1080]

When agricultural surplus was used for the production of ethanol in the United States, it provided economic benefits to farmers and to the farming economy. In 1990, almost 360 million bushels of surplus grain were used to produce ethanol. In that year, it is estimated that ethanol production increased farm income by 750 million while federal farm program costs dropped by 600 million and crude oil imports fell by over forty million barrels. [Pg.22]

Even in a country with much arable land such as the U.S., a large part of the agricultural land would be needed for biomass production for it to serve as a major source of fuel. A good fraction of arable land in the United States (and the world) would be needed for biomass-to-hydrogen production sufficient to displace a significant fraction of gasoline which may not be a practical or politically feasible approach. The United States uses about 350 million acres for crops and about 10% of this is cropland idled by federal programs. [Pg.114]

Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA) provide the basic legal framework for the federal "Superfund" program to clean up abandoned hazardous waste sites. [Pg.51]
