Type III reactions are the result of antigen-antibody (IgG) complexes that accumulate in tissues or the circulation, activate macrophages and the complement system, and trigger the influx of granulocytes and lymphocytes (inflammation). This is sometimes referred to as the Arthrus reaction and includes postinfection sequelae such as rheumatic heart disease. Farmer s lung, a pneumonitis caused by molds has been attributed to both type III and type IV, and some of the late phase response (4-6 hours after exposure) in asthmatics may be the result of Arthrus-type reactions. [Pg.336]

Organic dusts, such as mouldy hay, when inhaled cause a disease known as farmer s lung. It presents flu -like symptoms cough and difficulty in breathing occur within a few hours of exposure. Repeated exposure leads to further lung damage and chronic breathlessness. [Pg.350]

Moulds are a particular group of very small fungi which, under damp conditions, will grow on things such as walls, bread, cheese, leather and canvas. They can be beneficial (penicillin) or cause allergic reactions (asthma). Asthma attacks, athlete s foot and farmer s lung are all examples of fungal infections. [Pg.278]
