As is evident from the listing in Table 3, the fertilizer manufacturer has a wide array of compounds from which to choose. Final choices of products and processes therefore rest heavily on such other factors as availabiUty and cost of raw materials, economy of processing, safety of product, economy of handling and shipping, acceptabiUty of physical form and physical behavior of the product, and farmer acceptance. 

The flexibility of the bulk blending system and the close relationship with the farmer allow the bulk blender to provide a number of valuable supplementary services, such as adding herbicides, insecticides, micronutrients, or seeds to the blends bagging blends liming and sampling soil. Consultation services and custom appHcation can also be provided as can sale of anhydrous ammonia or nitrogen solution. 

The 1993 prices and values of fertilizer products consumed in the United States are summarized in Table 16. The prices given are fob production sites or principal terminals thus costs to farmers are greater by virtue of shipping and handling costs and local dealer profits.

Transportation and Distribution Cost. Although much ammonia serves as feedstock for other processes, the largest single use in the United States is as a direct appHcation fertiliser without further processing. This direct appHcation consumption is mosdy in the farm belt and ammonia produced in the Gulf Coast states is shipped to terminal faciUties and then distributed by retail outlets to the farmer.
