Some groups or families are given special names and have certain properties that should be addressed. But first you must understand why elements are put into the same group. Think about a family you know, not a chemical family, but a human family. Children look like their parents. They learn to do things from their parents and do them in the same way. The same holds true for the elements in the families of the periodic table they react the same way (for the most part). As you learned in the last chapter, each element has a certain number of valence electrons. As you will learn in the next chapter, it is the number of valence electrons of an atom that determines its chemical reactivity. Because the elements in a family have the same number of valence electrons, they will have a similar chemical reactivity. For example, Na and K can be compared in electron configuration and ions formed ... 

This interim methodology also provides a great transition from the public school system for the novice homeschooling family. Children will get a break from textbooks while parents will gain the much needed information and confidence necessary to succeed.

EPA has developed a new lead hazard information pamphlet that addresses renovation-specific lead exposure concerns. The development of this pamphlet, including the public comments received on the format and content, is discussed in greater detail in a separate notice published elsewhere in the Federal Register. This renovation-specific pamphlet, entitled Renovate Right Important Lead Hazard Information for Families, Child Care Providers and Schools, better informs families about the risks of exposure to lead-based paint hazards created during renovations and promotes the use of work practices and other health and safety measures during renovation activities.

Anthropological research with modern hunter-gatherers suggests an ideal type or model for this kind of society. After discharge, all infants were followed by a team composed of a pediatrician with subspecialty training in Child Development, a public health nurse, and a social worker. In order to maintain contact with the foster families and relatives who had responsibility for the care of the infant, team members made regular home visits and had frequent telephone contact with the infants caretakers. During the first 3 months of placement, infants were seen (an average of twice per month) for follow-up visits at home or in the UCLA Child Development Clinic. Phone conferences with caretakers were held on a biweekly basis. During the foil owing 3 months, clinic and home visits were tapered to once per month and phone contacts were made biweekly. 

The team also assisted the infants caretakers with obtaining appropriate medical care and treatment. The primary health care of 58 percent of the infants was received from physicians who lived within the foster family s community 42 percent of infants returned to the UCLA Pediatric Clinic for routine pediatric follow-up. In order to promote optimal medical care for all infants, team members provided the primary physician with summaries of the child s birth history, developmental progress, and information regarding the medical treatment and management of the PCP-exposed infant. 

Asthma results from a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors however, the underlying cause is not well understood. There appears to be an inheritable component, as the presence of asthma in a parent is a strong risk factor for the development of asthma in a child. This risk increases when a family history of atopy is also present.13 Approximately 50% of asthma can be attributed to atopy, and atopic asthma is more common in children than adults.3 Furthermore, atopy in childhood asthma is the strongest prognostic factor for continued asthma as an adult.1,3... 

The etiology of enuresis is poorly understood, but there is a clear genetic link. The incidence in children from families in whom there are no members with enuresis, where one parent had enuresis as a child, and where both parents had enuresis as children are 14%, 44%, and 77%, respectively. Loci for enuresis have been located on chromosomes 12,13, and 22. Sleep disorders are not considered major contributors with the exception of sleep apnea. Enuresis occurs in all sleep stages in proportion to the time spent in each stage. However, a small proportion of individuals are not aroused from sleep by bladder distention and have uninhibited bladder contractions preceding enuresis. 

Studies conducted in twins show a threefold increased risk of psoriasis in monozygotic twins versus fraternal twins.7 In addition, based on a study in 3,095 families with psoriasis, the calculated lifetime risk of developing psoriasis if no parent, one parent, or both parents have psoriasis was found to be 0.04, 0.28, and 0.65, respectively. If there was already one affected child in the family, the risks were increased to 0.24, 0.51, and 0.83, respectively.7,9 As many as 71% of patients with psoriasis during childhood have some positive family history.1 Similarly, psoriatic arthritis is heritable, with a prevalence 19 times higher in first-degree relatives of patients with psoriatic arthritis than in the general population.7...
