Eyeliners

Eye Makeup. Siace antiquity, eye makeup preparations have been used to beautify the area surrounding the eye. Various forms of eye shadows color the eyeHd mascaras color and lengthen the eyelashes eyeliners delineate the portion of the eyeHd from which the eyelashes emerge. The appearance of eyebrows can be altered with various types of makeup, and, finally, false eyelashes and eyebrows have been marketed for years. 

Eyeliners are available in two popular forms. One of these is a deeply pigmented emulsion that is appHed with a fine bmsh. The emulsion must be viscous to avoid miming and should dry to a waterproof film. The emulsion can be patterned after the emulsions used in mascaras. Glossy eyeliners require the use of nacreous pigments suspended in polymeric film formers, for example, acryUc acid copoljmiers. 

The second type of eyeliner is a soft crayon, in pencil form, that deUvers mass with minimal pressure. Products of this type may contain as much as 70% talc, 5% pigment, and 5% aluminum stearate. The Hpid portion may include squalene [111-02-4] and alkanolamides. 

Eyebrow pencils are used to outline the brow, especially after plucking of undesirable fibers. They are commonly prepared by stick mol ding. Eyebrow pencils are generally harder than eyeliner pencils. Like other pencils, the extmded mass is normally encased in wood. Some eyebrow pencils may be quite soft, approaching the texture of hpsticks. 

Eormulations of eye shadows (91), mascaras (92), and eyeliners (93) have been pubUshed. 

Antimony in its black form (Stibnite, Sb S ) was known at least 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Egyptian women used it as an eyeliner for both themselves and their children. It was known during biblical times and was referred to as stick-stone it was also used during this time as black eyeliner for wealthy women. 

Antimony has a long history of medical use. Some scholars believe that Mozart died after being given antimony by the physicians who were treating his depression and who were unaware of just how poisonous antimony was. The evidence for this story is scant. It is also known that around 870 bce. Queen Jezebel and her contemporaries used the mineral or ore antimony sulfide as a cosmetic to darken their eyelashes and as an eyeliner. It is still used for this purpose in many countries. 

Blepharopigmentation with Al-silicate has been introduced during the last decade as a technique for creating a permanent line along the eyelid margin, thus simulating a cosmetic eyeliner. Patients can have a delayed hypersensitivity granulomatous reaction [179].

Cosmetic suspensions are available in two types. The first comprises pigmented products that are suspended in essentially aqueous vehicles (liquid makeup, eyeliners, mascara, and blusher). The complex fiised-hexaeyelic skeleton of konbu acidin A (70), containing two guanidine units is related to palau amine (46) and styloguanidines (55-57). This molecule was isolated from an Okinawan Hymeniacidon sp. and exhibited inhibitory aetivity against eyelin dependent kinase 4 (cdk4) [71].

The main function of colour cosmetics, such as foundation, blushers, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, lip colour and nail enamel, is to improve appearance, impart colour, even out skin tones, hide imperfections and produce some protection. Several types of formulations are produced, ranging from aqueous and non-aqueous suspensions to oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions and powders (pressed or loose). 

Mascara and eyeliners are also complex formulations, and need to be carefully applied to the eye lashes and edges. Some of the preferred criteria for mascara are good deposition, ease of separation and lash curling. The appearance of the mascara should be as natural as possible. Lash lengthening and thickening are also desirable. The product should also remain for an adequate time and it should also be easily removed. Three types of formulations may be distinguished anhydrous solvent-based suspension, water-in-oil emulsion and oil-in-water emulsion. Water resistance can be achieved by addition of emulsion polymers, e.g. poly(vinyl acetate). 

The FDA has issued an alert for kohl, al-kahi, and siuma. These traditional eyeliners contain lead and are not suitable for cosmetic use.
