If (A i[X ]/A 2[Y ]) is not much smaller than unity, then as the substitution reaction proceeds, the increase in [X ] will increase the denominator of Eq. (8-65), slowing the reaction and causing deviation from simple first-order kinetics. This mass-law or common-ion effect is characteristic of an S l process, although, as already seen, it is not a necessary condition. The common-ion effect (also called external return) occurs only with the common ion and must be distinguished from a general kinetic salt effect, which will operate with any ion. An example is provided by the hydrolysis of triphenylmethyl chloride (trityl chloride) the addition of 0.01 M NaCl decreased the rate by fourfold. The solvolysis rate of diphenylmethyl chloride in 80% aqueous acetone was decreased by LiCl but increased by LiBr. ° The 5 2 mechanism will also yield first-order kinetics in a solvolysis reaction, but it should not be susceptible to a common-ion rate inhibition. [Pg.428]

Originally, vulcanization implied heating natural rubber with sulfur, but the term is now also employed for curing polymers. When sulfur is employed, sulfide and disulfide cross-links form between polymer chains. This provides sufficient rigidity to prevent plastic flow. A generic multipurpose fluidized bed is illustrated in Figure 2 (1). The soHds are contained in a vessel and gas is introduced into the system via a distributor, which is typically a drilled plate at the bottom of the vessel. A plenum chamber is provided below the distributor plate. The height of the soHds level above the distributor is called the bed height, and the vertical space above the bed height is called the freeboard. A splash zone may exist as a transition between the bed and freeboard. Cyclones, located either in the freeboard or external to the vessel, are used to remove soHds from the gas stream. A distributor is frequently installed at the top of the column for use during backwash. It collects water evenly and prevents resin from escaping the column should unexpected surges develop in the water flow during backwash. Columns lacking an upper distributor or screen to prevent loss of resin should have an external system to prevent resin from being lost to the drain. It is referred to as a resin trap and may consist of a porous bag that fits over the outlet pipe or a tank designed to lower the linear velocity. Traditionally, sodium dichromate dihydrate is mixed with 66° Bh (specific gravity = 1.84) sulfuric acid in a heavy-walled cast-iron or steel reactor. The mixture is heated externally, and the reactor is provided with a sweep agitator. Water is driven off and the hydrous bisulfate melts at about 160°C. As the temperature is slowly increased, the molten bisulfate provides an excellent heat-transfer medium for melting the chromic acid at 197°C without appreciable decomposition. As soon as the chromic acid melts, the agitator is stopped and the mixture separates into a heavy layer of molten chromic acid and a light layer of molten bisulfate. The chromic acid is tapped and flaked on water cooled roUs to produce the customary commercial form. The bisulfate contains dissolved CrO and soluble and insoluble chromic sulfates. Environmental considerations dictate purification and return of the bisulfate to the treating operation. [Pg.138]

Capital Investment. Erom the viewpoint of a project, all of the capital that must be raised is external capital. Equity capital is the ownership capital, eg, common and preferred stocks or retained cash, whereas debt capital consists of bonds, mortgages, debentures, and loans. Nearly all investment involves a mixture of both types so as to maximize the return on investment (21). The debt ratio (debt/total capital) for the chemical industry is typically over 30%. Because financial details are not well known during the preliminary phases of project analysis, the investment is viewed simply as the total capital that must be expended to design and build the project. [Pg.446]

Spray Dryers A spray diyer consists of a large cyhndrical and usu ly vertical chamber into which material to be dried is sprayed in the form of small droplets and into which is fed a large volume of hot gas sufficient to supply the heat necessary to complete evaporation of the liquid. Heat transfer and mass transfer are accomphshed by direct contact of the hot gas with the dispersed droplets. After completion of diying, the cooled gas and solids are separated. This may be accomplished partially at the bottom of the diying chamber by classification and separation of the coarse dried particles. Fine particles are separated from the gas in external cyclones or bag collectors. When only the coarse-particle fraction is desired for fini ed product, fines may be recovered in wet scrubbers the scrubber liquid is concentrated and returned as feed to the diyer. Horizontal spray chambers are manufactured with a longitudinal screw conveyor in the bottom of the diying chamber for continuous removal of settled coarse particles. [Pg.1229]
