The mill has been developed, partly at the University of Toronto, Canada1-20 21) and commercialised by General Comminution Inc. in Toronto. Capacities range from 20 kg to 10 tonnes of dry material per hour. A small laboratory pilot mill has an inside diameter of 160 mm and fits on a bench. The large, 640 mm diameter unit has external dimensions of about 2mx2mxlmin terms of height, length and width. [Pg.126]

Since these volumes are determined from external dimensions of the samples, they do not reflect actual changes in the cell wall volumes, and where this is claimed or assumed, the data needs to be treated with caution. Sample geometry is a crucial factor affecting the results obtained. In particular, the orientation of growth rings with respect to the sample... [Pg.34]

A solution of styrene in methanol to impregnate wood samples, followed by polymerization, was used by Furuno and Goto (1979). Penetration of the monomer into the cell wall was determined by solvent extraction of samples after polymerization. This removed lumen located polymer, whilst leaving the cell wall bound polymer in place. This showed that the concentration of cell wall bound polymer increased in proportion to the monomer content in methanol, up to a maximum of 80% of the monomer in the solvent. No cell wall penetration was observed for treatment with neat monomer. This was also found for bulking of the wood, as determined from external dimensions of the samples. Improvements in ASE were obtained as a result of the presence of cell wall bound polymer. To achieve similar ASE values with lumen located polymer required very high polymer loadings. [Pg.171]

The thin and sheet-like design of the micro mixer makes an interconnect with a fluidic environment difficult Also the small external dimensions of the micro mixer (see Table 4.3) cause some problems, e.g. the access ports are smaller than most off-the shelf parts, handling of the chip itself is difficult and tedious, the distances between inlet and outlet holes are very small, the chip is made from a brittle material, and consequently, high pressures cannot be applied by clamping [70],... [Pg.526]

As already indicated, the surface area of the dry clay appeared to be about 50m2g-1. The platy particles (the tactoids) were therefore about 20 layers thick during the first stage of water sorption, the particles were split into smaller tactoids of around six clay platelets (surface area of 105 m2 g-1). The external dimensions at p/p° > 0.25 remained fairly constant, but the interlamellar sorption was accompanied by swelling and the development of an accessible internal area (possibly as high as... [Pg.369]

Eq. (3.150) represents the wall law for turbulent flow, first formulated by Prandtl in 1925. The functions f(y+) and g(y+) are of a universal nature, because they are independent of external dimensions such as the height of a channel and are valid for all stratified flows independent of the boundary layer thickness. [Pg.309]

Monodispersed SBA-15 materials with 100% rodlike morphologies ( l-2 pm long, see Figure 8.57) have been obtained by using PI23 as template under static conditions without using salts.[120] This method afforded rodlike particles with temperature-dependent pore sizes ranging from 5.8 to 12.5 nm but with similar external dimensions. [Pg.580]

Nanomaterial means a natural, incidental, or manufactured material containing particles, in an unbound state or as an aggregate or as an agglomerate and where, for 50 % or more of the particles in the number size distribution, one or more external dimensions is in the size range 1-100 nm.1... [Pg.481]

Taking a hint from the Shamanic model of reality, it is a startling realization to discover that the only logical direction "perpendicular" to three dimensional space is "within." This is made clearer when we realize that we cannot subtract the observer from the equation or forget that subjective perception is the foundation upon which all observations are made. Perception from a "center" or "point" (the subjective psyche) comes first, and the three external dimensions radiate from that point. [Pg.57]

Due to the nature of sensing intensive physical parameters (i.e., pressure, flow, etc.) the sensor has to have access to the environment to be sensed. Thus mold packages are inappropriate, but premolded packages may be an alternative (Fig. 5.8.3). Although more expensive than the standard mold package, the pre-molded version offers the required accessibility and retains many of the typical mold package advantages, especially when the external dimensions are kept standard. [Pg.196]
