The preceding evidence for orientation at the interface plus the considerations given in Section III-3 make it clear that the polar end is directed toward the water and the hydrocarbon tails toward the air. Since the development of grazing incidence x-ray diffraction, much of the convincing evidence for long-range positional order in layers has come from this technique. Structural relaxations from distorted hexagonal structure toward a relaxed array have been seen in heneicosanol [215]. Rice and co-workers combine grazing incidence x-ray diffraction with molecular dynamics simulations to understand several ordering transitions [178,215-219]. 

Evidence for two-dimensional condensation at the water-Hg interface is reviewed by de Levie [135]. Adsorption may also be studied via differential capacity data where the interface is modeled as parallel capacitors, one for the Hg-solvent interface and another for the Hg-adsorbate interface [136, 137]. 

While evidence for hydration forces date back to early work on clays [1], the understanding of these solvent-induced forces was revolutionized by Horn and Israelachvili using the modem surface force apparatus. Here, for the first time, one had a direct measurement of the oscillatory forces between crossed mica cylinders immersed in a solvent, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS) [67]. 

Surface heterogeneity may be inferred from emission studies such as those studies by de Schrijver and co-workers on P and on R adsorbed on clay minerals [197,198]. In the case of adsorbed pyrene and its derivatives, there is considerable evidence for surface mobility (on clays, metal oxides, sulfides), as from the work of Thomas [199], de Mayo and co-workers [200], Singer [201] and Stahlberg et al. [202]. There has also been evidence for ground-state bimolecular association of adsorbed pyrene [66,203]. The sensitivity of pyrene to the polarity of its environment allows its use as a probe of surface polarity [204,205]. Pyrene or ofter emitters may be used as probes to study the structure of an adsorbate film, as in the case of Triton X-100 on silica [206], sodium dodecyl sulfate at the alumina surface [207] and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride adsorbed onto silver electrodes from water and dimethylformamide [208]. In all cases progressive structural changes were concluded to occur with increasing surfactant adsorption.

As for CIDNP, the polarization pattern is multiplet (E/A or A/E) for each radical if Ag is smaller than the hyperfme coupling constants. In the case where Ag is large compared with the hyperfmes, net polarization (one radical A and the other E or vice versa) is observed. The combination of electrochemistry and photochemistry is a fonn of dual-activation process. Evidence for a photochemical effect in addition to an electrochemical one is nonnally seen m the fonn of photocurrent, which is extra current that flows in the presence of light [, 89 and 90]. In photoelectrochemistry, light is absorbed into the electrode (typically a semiconductor) and this can induce changes in the electrode s conduction properties, thus altering its electrochemical activity. Alternatively, the light is absorbed in solution by electroactive molecules or their reduced/oxidized products inducing photochemical reactions or modifications of the electrode reaction. In the latter case electrochemical cells (RDE or chaimel-flow cells) are constmcted to allow irradiation of the electrode area with UV/VIS light to excite species involved in electrochemical processes and thus promote fiirther reactions.

Detailed x-ray diffraction studies on polar liquid crystals have demonstrated tire existence of multiple smectic A and smectic C phases [M, 15 and 16].
