Evaluate the Present Status

The American people, Congress, and the President have growing concerns about U.S. competitiveness and this country s ability to lead the world in innovation and job creation. A recent National Research Council report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, evaluated the present status of U.S. competitiveness and made specific recommendations for improvements.

Molecular theories, based in large part on ideas about chain entanglements, have been constructed to explain certain of these observations. The theories must still be regarded as tentative and incomplete. They are based, first of all, on reasonable but still incompletely accepted ideas about chain organization in concentrated solutions and melts. Secondly, they deal with the response of individual chains or pairs of chains in a smoothed medium, rather than with an entire interacting ensemble. Finally, they circumvent the deep mathematical difficulties of the central problem, interaction between mutually uncrossable sequences of chain elements, by approximations which are not easy to evaluate. The purpose of this review is to summarize the present status of entanglement theories and the data upon which they are based. 

The fundamental theme for this review was the attempt to illustrate the "flavor of current research in this area. If one were to summarize (62, 146) the present status of our knowledge of these remarkable systems, it might be that most of the properties of excess electrons in solution can be interpreted in terms of models that are (qualitatively) easily understood, but quantitatively evaluated only with considerable effort. This is, indeed, an observation pertinent not only to metal solutions, but to inorganic chemistry in general ... 

The main object of this review is to look at some of the early developments of quantitative tic in terms of the fluorometric detection methods that were developed for the evaluation of pesticides. It is also intended to discuss the present status of the technique and consider its future. 

Within the framework of this philosophy, this symposium is concerned with several topic areas pertinent to the problems associated with the identification and confirmation of pesticide residues at submicrogram levels. The purpose of this symposium is to survey the present status of the classical physical, chemical, and biochemical techniques employed for residue analysis to evaluate critically the more recently applied, relatively unexploited techniques which have become available for the detection, quantitation, and characterization of pesticide residues and finally, to examine and discuss the current needs and problems, stimulate and encourage greater research activity, and point the way to future developments in the analysis of pesticide residues. 

The aim of this paper is to describe the present status of development and application, and evaluation of PTGL processes in our country. 

Unfortunately, the present models are still on a level aiming at reasonable solutions with several model parameters tuned to known flow fields. For predictive purposes, these models are hardly able to predict unknown flow fields with reasonable degree of accuracy. It appears that the CFD evaluations of bubble columns by use of multi-dimensional multi-fluid models still have very limited inherent capabilities to fully replace the empirical based analysis (i.e., in the framework of axial dispersion models) in use today [63]. After two decades performing fluid dynamic modeling of bubble columns, it has been realized that there is a limit for how accurate one will be able to formulate closure laws adopting the Eulerian framework. In the subsequent sections a survay of the present status on bubble column modeling is given. 

Biologically active platinum complexes, which cross-link defined regions of DNA in cells, possess antitumour activity, and these are evaluated in Chapter 4. In Chapter 5, the present status of the medicinal uses of Cannabis is discussed, particularly as two cannabinoids are now official drugs. The latest methods of treating insulin-resistant diabetic patients with hypoglycaemic agents which do not act by increasing insulin release are described in Chapter 6.

Our main contributions to the study of denaturation consist of experiments to evaluate the structural status of fibrinogen eluted from glass. Clearly, it would be preferable to evaluate structural alteration while the protein remains on the surface but such an approach presents formidable experimental difficulties, not the least of which is sensitivity. Therefore, we made the compromise of studying eluted protein and making the tacit assumption that the eluted protein is structurally similar to the adsorbed protein. The eluents used (high molarity buffers and surfactants) were shown not to affect the properties examined. 

As for most of the other advanced systems, these new protonic gel-type membranes appear to be still under evaluation. Presently, Nafion and related membranes still dominate the fuel cell market. The limited length of this chapter and its focus on batteries does not allow inclusion of a description of the present status of the polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The interested reader is referred to the many books and review articles available on the subject [e.g., 113,126,127]. 

The use of drugs is a realistic approach to the prevention of atherosclerosis and therefore, the design and evaluation of effective compounds represents an endeavor of ever-increasing importance. Thus, the further aspect of this review will address itself to a survey of the present status of research on hypolipidemic agents and their therapeutic effects. 

The aim of the work presented is to evaluate the physiological status of tracheal aspirate from infants with NRDS before and after Curosurf therapy via interfacial tensiometry. The measurements are made by the pendant drop method, which requires a minimal volume of the clinical samples. 

As editors, we have assembled the leading experts on the various vitamins to evaluate the current status of the role of vitamins and their binding proteins in the regulation of cellular processes with a view to their potential use in therapeutics. The material presented here has been designed to expand the horizon of researchers in these associated areas. 

The various empirical and semitheoretical correlations for estimating design parameters ofBCR have been reviewed and critically evaluated by Shah et al. [5] and Deckwer [6]. Also specific recommendations for their use have been given by these authors. Therefore, this problem needs no further consideration here. This contribution concentrates on the present status and future trends of the design and simulation of BCR on the basis of mathematical models. In what follows, it is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic principles of absorption-reaction theory as outlined in chemical reaction engineering text books and standard reference monographs [19, 20].
