There are little or no olefins in crude oil or straight run (direct from crude distillation) products but they are found in refining products, particularly in the fractions coming from conversion of heavy fractions whether or not these processes are thermal or catalytic. The first few compounds of this family are very important raw materials for the petrochemical Industry e.g., ethylene, propylene, and butenes. [Pg.8]

Acetaldehyde oxidation to anhydride does not consume great amounts of energy. The strongly exothermic reaction actually furnishes energy and the process is widely used in Europe. Acetaldehyde must be prepared from either acetylene or ethylene. Unfortunately, use of these raw materials cancels the other advantages of this route. Further development of more efficient acetaldehyde oxidation as weU as less expensive materials of constmction would make that process more favorable. [Pg.78]

Other acetyl chloride preparations include the reaction of acetic acid and chlorinated ethylenes in the presence of ferric chloride [7705-08-0] (29) a combination of ben2yl chloride [100-44-7] and acetic acid at 85% yield (30) conversion of ethyUdene dichloride, in 91% yield (31) and decomposition of ethyl acetate [141-78-6] by the action of phosgene [75-44-5] producing also ethyl chloride [75-00-3] (32). The expense of raw material and capital cost of plant probably make this last route prohibitive. Chlorination of acetic acid to monochloroacetic acid [79-11-8] also generates acetyl chloride as a by-product (33). Because acetyl chloride is cosdy to recover, it is usually recycled to be converted into monochloroacetic acid. A salvage method in which the mixture of HCl and acetyl chloride is scmbbed with H2SO4 to form acetyl sulfate has been patented (33). [Pg.82]

Because of its relatively high, price, there have been continuing efforts to replace acetylene in its major appHcations with cheaper raw materials. Such efforts have been successful, particularly in the United States, where ethylene has displaced acetylene as raw material for acetaldehyde, acetic acid, vinyl acetate, and chlorinated solvents. Only a few percent of U.S. vinyl chloride production is still based on acetylene. Propjiene has replaced acetylene as feed for acrylates and acrylonitrile. Even some recent production of traditional Reppe acetylene chemicals, such as butanediol and butyrolactone, is based on new raw materials. [Pg.102]

This route has been completely displaced, first by chlorination and dehydro-chlorination of ethylene or vinyl chloride, and more recendy by oxychlorination of two-carbon raw materials (2) (see Chlorocarbonsandchlorohydrocarbons). [Pg.102]

In the 1980s cost and availabiUty of acetylene have made it an unattractive raw material for acrylate manufacture as compared to propylene, which has been readily available at attractive cost (see Acetylene-DERIVED chemicals). As a consequence, essentially all commercial units based on acetylene, with the exception of BASF s plant at Ludwigshafen, have been shut down. AH new capacity recendy brought on stream or announced for constmction uses the propylene route. Rohm and Haas Co. has developed an alternative method based on aLkoxycarbonylation of ethylene, but has not commercialized it because of the more favorable economics of the propylene route. [Pg.152]

Ethylene Cyanohydrin Process. This process, the fkst for the manufacture of acryhc acid and esters, has been replaced by more economical ones. During World War I, the need for ethylene as an important raw material for the synthesis of ahphatic chemicals led to development of this process (16) in both Germany, in 1927, and the United States, in 1931. [Pg.155]

Raw Material. PVA is synthesized from acetjiene [74-86-2] or ethylene [74-85-1] by reaction with acetic acid (and oxygen in the case of ethylene), in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc acetate, to form vinyl acetate [108-05-4] which is then polymerized in methanol. The polymer obtained is subjected to methanolysis with sodium hydroxide, whereby PVA precipitates from the methanol solution. [Pg.337]

Polymers. Hydrocarbons from petroleum and natural gas serve as the raw material for virtually all polymeric materials commonly found in commerce, with the notable exception of rayon which is derived from cellulose extracted from wood pulp. Even with rayon, however, the cellulose is treated with acetic acid (qv), much of which is manufactured from ethylene (see Fibers, regenerated cellulosics). [Pg.369]

Vinyl ethers are prepared in a solution process at 150—200°C with alkaH metal hydroxide catalysts (32—34), although a vapor-phase process has been reported (35). A wide variety of vinyl ethers are produced commercially. Vinyl acetate has been manufactured from acetic acid and acetylene in a vapor-phase process using zinc acetate catalyst (36,37), but ethylene is the currently preferred raw material. Vinyl derivatives of amines, amides, and mercaptans can be made similarly. With this type of burner, a wide variety of raw materials, ranging from propane to naphtha, and heavier hydrocarbons containing 10—15 carbon atoms, can be used. Purified terephthalic acid and dimethyl terephthalate are used as raw materials for the production of saturated polyesters. During 1993, the combined worldwide production of purified terephthafic acid plus dimethyl terephthalate exceeded 14 x 10 t (42), which is 80% of the total benzenepolycarboxyfic acid production. Terephthafic acid is also produced ia technical or cmde grades which are not pure enough for manufacture of poly(ethylene terephthalate). Small amounts of polymer-grade terephthaHc acid and dimethyl terephthalate are used as polymer raw materials for a variety of appHcations, eg, adhesives and coatings. They are also used to make high performance polymers or engineering resins. Chemical Processing Intermediates and Other Applications. Monoethanolamine can be used as a raw material to produce ethylenedianiine. This technology has some advantages over the ethylene dichloride process in that salts are not a by-product. When low boiling ingredients such as ethylene glycol are used, a special provision in the form of a partial condenser is needed to return them to the reactor. Otherwise, not only is the balance of the reactants upset and the raw material cost of the resin increased, but also they become part of the pollutant in the waste water and incur additional water treatment costs. Usually, a vertical reflux condenser or a packed column is used as the partial condenser, which is installed between the reactor and the overhead total condenser, as shown in Figure 3. The temperature in the partial condenser is monitored and maintained to effect a fractionation between water, which is to pass through, and the glycol or other materials, which are to be condensed and returned to the reactor. If the fractionation is poor, and water vapor is also condensed and returned, the reaction is retarded and there is a loss of productivity. As the reaction proceeds toward completion, water evolution slows down, and most of the glycol has combined into the resin stmcture. The temperature in the partial condenser may then be raised to faciUtate the removal of water vapor. [Pg.40]

Allyl Glycidyl Ether. This ether is used mainly as a raw material for silane coupling agents and epichlorohydrin mbber. Epichlorohydrin mbber is synthesized by polymerizing the epoxy group of epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, and aHyl glycidyl ether, AGE, with an aluminum alkyl catalyst (36). This mbber has high cold-resistance. [Pg.77]

Organoaluminum Compounds. Apphcation of aluminum compounds in organic chemistry came of age in the 1950s when the direct synthesis of trialkylalurninum compounds, particularly triethylalurninum and triisobutylalurninum from metallic aluminum, hydrogen, and the olefins ethylene and isobutylene, made available economic organoalurninum raw materials for a wide variety of chemical reactions (see a-BONDED alkyls and aryls). [Pg.137]
